The main island in Orkney (and Shetland as well) is called Mainland. Funny, for an island area off an island nation. We had one nights stay in. A pretty seaside town with a nice riverwalk, before catching the ferry North. Using Stromness as a basecamp, we rented bikes for a couple of days to ride out to some local archaeological sites.

We arranged a driver through our hostel, and set off for Dahshur. After retrieving my newly expanded passport from the American Embassy. The site at Dahshur. We then went to the stepped pyramid at Saqqara. We visited an on site. I think this would keep some of the would be guides away, but you'd have less time and freedom to wander.
