A reporter's account of chillin' with climate-watching scientists in the arctic and antarctic. Tuesday, March 16, 2010. Shackleton, after waiting for established air route and better food, gets to South Pole. OK, not that Shackleton. But a distance relative of the old man became not the first, but about the gazillionth person to make it to the South Pole. From the Military Times:. SHACKLETON DESCENDANT REACHES SOUTH POLE. After five attempts, a Shackleton has finally made it to the South Pole. Scott Shac...

Polarized: That water's cold. And deep, too.

http://scottcanon.blogspot.com/2009/12/that-waters-cold-and-deep-too.html

A reporter's account of chillin' with climate-watching scientists in the arctic and antarctic. Sunday, December 13, 2009. That water's cold. And deep, too. Ahab wannabes were grabbing their harpoons. The great white (really white) one bobbed in the Southern Ocean on Sunday. There's cold, and then there's dangly parts take a vacation cold. The water here is actually slightly below 32 degrees farenheit (salinity at work). So why not go swimming? Indeed, you do know when you hit the water. Time to head for ...

A reporter's account of chillin' with climate-watching scientists in the arctic and antarctic. Thursday, December 17, 2009. Your ride is here. Ever been at a party, having a great time, and your ride home starts honking the horn out front? The ship that will haul us back to Chile arrived this morning, with plans for steaming north on Friday morning. Its nice to hear from you every day. Keep up the good work when you get home. Polarized: Seal sleeps, science stop

http://scottcanon.blogspot.com/2009/12/seal-sleeps-science-stop.html

A reporter's account of chillin' with climate-watching scientists in the arctic and antarctic. Friday, December 11, 2009. Seal sleeps, science stop. OK, so it's not this crabeater seal's fault that a trailer home-sized ice berg has blocked in all the boats today. But the way it's lounging about on the same ice that is keeping researchers and the rest of us from heading out in the water seems to rub things in a bit. What do you do when you cant get out? December 12, 2009 at 11:13 AM. The Kansas City Star.

Monday Beans: April 2013

http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 8, 2013. On one of our first forays off the boat in the Bahamas I ordered Peas and Rice at Angela Starfish on Harbour Island. They were so good I had to ask how to make them. Angela was a little vague, not because she didn't want to share a secret recipe but I think because she couldn't believe there was anyone on earth who didn't already know how to make them. Finally I wheedled out of her a few key ingredients: onions, peppers, thyme. It's a start. Add a cup of rice and stir and cook for ...

Monday Beans: Tuscany on 21st Street

http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010/06/tuscany-on-21st-street.html

Wednesday, June 9, 2010. Tuscany on 21st Street. Jack and I don't go to supermarkets much. We have a shopping route that mostly takes us up and down the streets of the Strip District. To produce markets and specialty stores. Particularly our favorites, Penn Mac. S, and Reyna's. We do our shopping and reward ourselves with espresso and cappuccino at La Prima Espresso. 1 cup cannellini beans, rinsed and soaked overnight. Drain the beans and cook in the broth until just tender. Drain. 3-4 scallions, sliced.

Monday Beans: March 2010

http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 23, 2010. New cousins, new beans. I'm a family history addict. I'm lucky to have been born into a family of story tellers and writers, so reading and listening to family lore my whole life made me want to know more about the various branches of my ancestry. Why did their names change? So I sought out histories of the Huguenots, Quebec, the Banat, Haiti, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas to learn about their lives. Suddenly- and it does seem sudden- we find ourselves in the future. Millions of...

Monday Beans: Early CSA Overload

http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010/06/our-csa-farm-started-with-bang-this.html

Tuesday, June 15, 2010. Our CSA farm started with a bang this season. As always, the first few weeks are mostly lettuce and greens, herbs, spring onions and garlic scapes. We live on main course salads during June, trying to keep up with the produce we get every week. When Monday rolled around this week I happened to come across a wonderful article by Anna Thomas. In the latest issue of Yoga Journal about her book Love Soup. Butter Bean and Summer Vegetable Soup. 1 cup dried giant lima beans. Cook the be...

Monday Beans: February 2010

http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 23, 2010. In the Skytrain the first day I saw an ad for Yellow Pages that made me chuckle. The headline read "Touched the pole? And the text said you could find anything in the Yellow Pages, including hand sanitizer. Well, I touched the pole. By the time we left Vancouver I had the sniffles, and when we got home a week later I was ready for my usual sinus-clearing comfort food, something spicy and mushy. This time I decided on an Ethiopian dish called Mesir Wat. 2 cloves of garlic.

Monday Beans: April 2010

http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 27, 2010. Appalachian Beans in my Dreams. This week we drove 1100 miles to South Carolina and back for a 3-hour video shoot. Our route took us the length of West Virginia, over the mountains of southwest Virgina, and across North Carolina. This is the heart of Appalachia, one of the most distinctive cultural areas in America. I've loved Appalachia ever since I read Catherine Marshall's " Christy. What's happening to Appalachia? What's happening to America? Which are plain pinto beans cooke...

Monday Beans: August 2010

http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 13, 2010. My sister and I grew up in a little town on the outer suburbs of Philadelphia. Ridley Park. Is just over one square mile in area and when we lived there the population was under 10,000. We had our own high school. I idolized her and wanted to be just like her. One day at the beginning of my junior year they announced over the PA that anyone interested in applying to be a exchange student should see their guidance counselor. O happy day! For the next few months I was focused on ge...

Monday Beans: January 2010

http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 25, 2010. Awhile back we enjoyed a series of books by Lin and Larry Pardey about their sail around the world in the 24-ft Seraffyn. The books. Are charming and adventurous and worth a read. The Pardeys. Giant Limas with Mushrooms and Kale. 1/2 lb. dried giant limas, soaked overnight. 1 red onion, chopped. 4 cloves of garlic, minced. 3 c vegetable broth. 1 lb mixed mushrooms (I used shitakes and baby bellas). 1/2 bunch kale, blanched, squeezed dry and chopped. A few sprigs of thyme. Saute ...

Monday Beans: June 2010

http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, June 29, 2010. As much as I love Indian food, I can't seem to make it with ease so I usually rely on this or that cookbook. This version of Chana Masala is based largely on "Very Spicy, Delicious Chick Peas" from Madhur Jaffrey's World of the East Vegetarian Cooking. 2 cups dried chick peas. Cook the chick peas in water to cover until just tender. Drain, reserving liquid. 2 Tbsp. oil. 1 large onion, finely chopped. 6-8 cloves garlic, minced. 1 Tbsp. ground coriander. 2 tsp ground cumin. Our CSA ...

Scott Canterbury Fishing

Tuesday, May 8, 2012. The second morning my early bite died and I was able to salvage my day with a small limit up the river. After falling from 5th to 13th I really felt blessed to be in my second top 20 in a row. Day four went pretty good but I just never got the bite I needed to win. I caught more fish on day four than any of the others but just did not get that quality bite that I needed to get my first tour win. Tuesday, April 3, 2012. Table Rock Tournament Recap.
