The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is a programme of activities for young people aged between 14 and 24. There are 3 levels of awards available – Bronze, Silver and Gold. These equate to Platinum, Diamond Chief Scout and The Queens Scout Awards. Young people achieve the awards by completing a personal programme of activities in 4 areas (5 for the Gold Award):. In June 2013 SMESU was deeply honoured to recieve the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the first to be presented to a voluntary group in Edinburgh. It is presented for outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping others in the community, improving the quality of life and opportunity for others and providing an outstanding service. In July 2016, 55 SMESU members and leaders will be traveling out to Cambodia to work on a development project, having a positive impact on a local community whilst developing our own skills, values and outlook.
