Screen Savour: The Gold Rush (1925)

http://www.screensavour.blogspot.com/2008/09/gold-rush-1925.html

Dark of the Matinee. Film for the Soul. Wonders in the Dark. The Gold Rush (1925). D Charles Chaplin. United States. 94 mins. What impresses me most about The Gold Rush. Is how it maintains a precise equilibrium of comedy and pathos. Of Charles Chaplin's three agreed upon masterpieces (all of which I love equally), this is the one that seems to do this the best. City Lights. Tilts more toward the pathos and Modern Times. Tilts more toward the comedy, but The Gold Rush. Released in 1925, The Gold Rush.

Dark of the Matinee. Film for the Soul. Wonders in the Dark. Media Month: January 2011. Take, for example, Boogie Nights. Turns from full of potential into potential unfulfilled. Or consider Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth. 1998), another wonderfully acted film with notable production values that falls just short of surpassing the trappings of typical historical melodrama. Were it not for the sometimes patchy editing, Elizabeth. And The Great Dictator. 1995) and The Insider. However, has better rhythm but infe...

Screen Savour: Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928)

Dark of the Matinee. Film for the Soul. Wonders in the Dark. Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928). D Buster Keaton and Charles Reisner / USA / 71m. It’s difficult to begin a discussion of Buster Keaton’s Steamboat Bill, Jr. The idea behind Steamboat Bill, Jr. Came from Charles Reisner, who had worked with Charles Chaplin on The Kid. And The Gold Rush. The spatial construction is nowhere near as nuanced as The General. Which makes great use of small sets contrasted against larger environments, or The Navigator.

Movie Junkie: January 2009

http://moo-v-junkie.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Directed by Steven Conrad. Written by Steven Conrad. Starring: Sean William Scott, John C. Reilly, Jenna Fischer, Lili Taylor. IMDB rating: 6.0. Despite this is supposed to be a comedy, I felt like I was watching a drama instead of comedy. More importantly, I think a lack of support from the music, the movie felt empty. What were intended to be funny turned out sour in the end. Or perhaps a too biased plot? Or lacked of top dialogues? Or maybe all of them were the culprits? Posted by E.F. 8217; And I tel...

Would you like to sell your soul in exchange for eternal youth and beauty? Final Rating: 8.0. Directed by Oliver Parker. Written by Toby Finlay. Based on the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Movie Junkie: October 2009

The Damned United tells the story of Brian Clough’s days while managing the Leeds United in 1974. His tenure lasted for 44 days before he was sacked by the Leeds’ board of directors on September 12th 1974. The cast was remarkable. Playing as Brian Clough was Michael Sheen, while Timothy Spall played as Peter Taylor, a longtime assistant to Brian Clough. Then there was Colm Meaney portraying Don Revie and also Jim Broadbent as Sam Longson, the chairman of the Derby County. There were flashbacks towards Cl...

Unfortunately, no one would be able to answer that. This movie also acts as a reminder on how things were when women were treated as second-class citizens. Even now, in some countries, this still happens. Posted by E.F. Directed by Andrew Stanton.

The latest from James Cameron took around 15 years in the making from script to finish and the film is probably opening a new chapter in filmmaking with its ability to blend live-action and computer-generated objects. We may be awed by the beauty of the nature in Pandora, but let’s not forget that we also have such beautiful landscape and wildlife here in the real world, gradually deteriorating due to human’s exploitation of natural resources. Movie Junkie: Kabluey

http://moo-v-junkie.blogspot.com/2010/01/kabluey.html

While some see this movie as a dark comedy addressing war in Iraq and the dot com bubble burst, I prefer to see it as a reminder that a person should be valued only based on his/her professional capacity, wealth or socialibity, but rather based on his/her kindness to others. Overall, it is more like a drama rather than a comedy, but it’s up to the audience where they want to put it. Great plot and fine performance made this film one of my favorites. Final rating: 10.0. Directed by Scott Prendergast.
