The Newfoundland Memorial at Beaumont-Hamel, France | senior nomad

The Road from Here. Travel reflections from a wandering senior. April 21, 2014. The Newfoundland Memorial at Beaumont-Hamel, France. From my writing room, I can see the Wanaka cenotaph commemorating those lost in the first and second world wars. Today, Wanaka is a town of about 5000 but back then, the town was so small, it wasn’t listed in the 1911 census. According to that census, these were the populations of towns close to Wanaka:. It is the 99. We were avoiding the. Four years later, while my partner...
No car, no drama; local walks to Wanaka’s “best side” | senior nomad

The Road from Here. Travel reflections from a wandering senior. April 8, 2014. No car, no drama; local walks to Wanaka’s best side. I was walking down the track from the top of Mount Iron and stopped at the bench. The white-capped mountains edged by their green skirts and the stark contrast of Lake Wanaka’s deep blue water sent my heart into my throat. As Edna St Vincent Millay wrote, Oh world I can not hold thee close enough. From the top, stretching out to the west is Lake Wanaka, to the north-west Dub...

The Road from Here. Travel reflections from a wandering senior. February 16, 2015. I was 54 when I retired. My friends asked, But what are you going to do? You’re so young. I always answered with confidence. Bonnie’s going to paint and I’m going to write. Because I had co-authored sixteen English textbooks, taught creative writing and even studied with esteemed Canadian novelist, Timothy Findley twice – the reaction was most often a nodding of the head and, Of course. Without journalism training I had ne...

The Road from Here. Travel reflections from a wandering senior. March 16, 2014. For the most part, I think city passes are a waste of money. At worst, they encourage a been there, done that attitude to tourism. At best, they include a bus tour of the city, allowing visitors to take note of places they’d like to see, and permit visitors entrance to attractions through the already ticketed line, which may be slightly shorter. It was to my own surprise, therefore, when I insisted we buy the Stockholm Card.
University Residence: not so romantic at 62 | senior nomad

The Road from Here. Travel reflections from a wandering senior. March 15, 2015. University Residence: not so romantic at 62. I never lived in residence in university. Before I got married in third year and moved to my in-laws’ basement apartment, I stayed at home with my parents. Residence always seemed sort of romantic the first giant step toward independence. By the time our taxi pulled up to the front door of the residence, it was 1:45 am I had been assured late check-in was a non-issue, since the des...

Scribe's Arcade | A Creation of Jumping Tangents
A Creation of Jumping Tangents. Return of the same in Galicia. July 31, 2014. Is it co-incidence that I have, metaphorically speaking, hesitated to complete this chronicle about walking the Camino? For just as I felt on the actual walk part of me wishes to continue and part of me wants to remain at O’Cebreiro. Should I stay or should I go now? What has prompted me to write now? Cathedral Santiago de Compostella. About the mysterious Church at Eunate. Then I stumbled past this:-. Quite suddenly tears were...
