Scrubbing Up: January 2011
http://scrubbingup.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Assorted remarks on the ins and outs of medical training. Friday, January 7, 2011. Nutrition - cooking and discussing. We travelled to a place called Chittalapakkam today, where we discussed nutrition first with very small children and then with their mothers. We met in a balwadi. Or creche. We discussed the importance of fruits and vegetables, drinking milk, and washing hands. After this, we went to someone's home, which was really a hut, and made high-nutrition rotis. Thursday, January 6, 2011. I wonde...

Assorted remarks on the ins and outs of medical training. Saturday, June 28, 2008. Death be not proud. Or can you imagine if I actually went over there? They'd see the white coat and shoot daggers at me. You have a white coat. You were supposed to know what to do. Why is my father/son/husband/brother/friend/lover dead? Why didn't you save him? Friday, June 27, 2008. How important is it for us to really learn community medicine? Most Indian medical students consider community medicine to be the biggest wa...
Scrubbing Up: back in business
http://scrubbingup.blogspot.com/2011/01/back-in-business.html
Assorted remarks on the ins and outs of medical training. Wednesday, January 5, 2011. It's been difficult to keep updates going when I haven't had much to say, much to talk about. But I saw - and treated - my first cases today. What a strange approach! I wonder, what does she actually have? Will she get better? Or will she keep taking short courses of antibiotics periodically prescribed by doctors who just want to get the patients to go home? I know I won't see her again. Doctor, Please Explain….
Scrubbing Up: and how are you feeling today?
http://scrubbingup.blogspot.com/2008/06/and-how-are-you-feeling-today.html
Assorted remarks on the ins and outs of medical training. Thursday, June 26, 2008. And how are you feeling today? White coats parade through the blinding corridors. Some have faces perched on top. Others with patent leather shoes polished to perfection. Pink and blue and green scrubs shout orders. Codes and meds and labs and scans echo. Hospital gowns wheel loyal oxygen tanks and IV stands through days and nights filled with coughing and fevers and flat lines. Families are too afraid to look. Dose of Rea...

http://helpimadoctor.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 12, 2009. From Hollywood to the Hospital: Redefining Glamour. The media mystique is pervasive:. You've got doctor soap operas featuring chiseled, Botoxed doctors barking "Nurse, scalpel, STAT! As they powerfully steer gleaming gurneys through endless hallways, while scandals fester in deceptively innocent supply closets. You've got doctor beach-lit. Featuring a tortured young doctor-protagonist questing after a tainted stethoscope which has been implanted with a timed-release, deadly d...
Help! I'm a doctor...: Green Tea and Beyond: The Wisdom of Medicine.
http://helpimadoctor.blogspot.com/2008/08/green-tea-and-beyond-wisdom-of-medicine.html
Friday, August 8, 2008. Green Tea and Beyond: The Wisdom of Medicine. How do you really learn medicine? As I complete lap #2 in the 12 month intern year cycle, this question often rears its niggling, bemused head (okay, maybe that's. Bemused head. But the question is still niggling. And I still got to use both those words! Or "Why does the corner of my right eyelash itch when I'm trying to sleep? That one's for all my fellow high school Mathletes and Math Club alumni! Long live the differential! Could be...

Help! I'm a doctor...: Happy Holidays: Who Needs Barbados When You've Got the ICU?
http://helpimadoctor.blogspot.com/2008/12/happy-holidays-who-needs-barbados-when.html
Monday, December 22, 2008. Happy Holidays: Who Needs Barbados When You've Got the ICU? I woke up the other morning and realized with a start: Oh-my-gosh-it's-already-December-how-did-that-happen? Even then, I'm a bit slow in the mornings. Luckily, I'm a dedicated Walgreens customer, and anyone who knows anything about Walgreens knows that this store is like America's weathervane. To wit:. Pondering if a recession is looming? Trying to keep up with current city trends? Wondering what contemporary songs th...
Help! I'm a doctor...: July 2008
http://helpimadoctor.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 19, 2008. Better than Broadway: The Hospital's Opening Act. Odd as it sounds, sometimes in the flurry of signing orders, collecting vitals, making sure you can forget that most of medicine is "people-based". In theory, medicine is a great job for the extroverted chatterbox - you know, the person who solemnly insists , "But. Have a big nose stake our claim to Nerd membership in peace. Get your own support group.). But just who makes up t. His cast of characters, you ask? I call that a hospi...

Wednesday, August 27, 2008. Killing my circadian rhythms softly: Night Float Adventures. Remember that principle of "see one, do one, teach one" I was talking about in my last entry? Well, nothing quite exemplifies my residency program's unshakable confidence in its neophyte interns quite like a rotation schedule that has said intern taking care of. 80 medical inpatients -. All the medicine interns' patients -. That was then. Now, in today's modern world, we not only have microwaves and TiVo: with ni...

Thursday, April 30, 2009. When the Hands of Time Come Down with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Surviving the Residency Rut. Isn't it strange how quickly time flies? If I earned a dollar for every time I heard that. As an intern, I would likely end this year by walking up to the Gods of Residency and Improbable Living On A Little More Than Minimum Wage, coolly handing in my sickly, pen-and-crumb-stained coat and announcing, "Later, suckers - The Good Life just called, and it wants me back.". As a result, it's ha...

Monday, June 30, 2008. Ime I heard "Dr. K", I was standing on a stage in front of about 1,000 people in Michigan, in a beautiful auditorium decked with flags and ornate paneling. Around me were beaming physicians, wearing beret hats and colored sashes. I remember thinking I had. It was sneaky, really. Who could possibly get scared when our medical school had put into place so many tricky little details. To make sure you felt absolutely Awesome and Special? Or realize just how. The person behind that pomp...

INTRODUCING PROFESSOR P SCRUBBINGTON'S EMPORIUM OF CLEAN.
