ABCD - Commercial Applications. The ABCD is well suited for commercial or military applications. Commercial and navy divers often carry heavy equipment with them. This is compensated for with a conventional lift bag or bladder. Of course, the buoyancy changes greatly with depth.

If the diver is using a conventional BCD (red line) they will experience a 20 lb increase in lift. Thus the diver must release air as they ascend or they will enter an uncontrolled ascent. With the ABCD, the diver experience only a 3 lb increase in lift, which can easily be compensated for by shifting the tidal volume when breathing, something the diver does instinctively. Problems with buoyancy during a dive are a common cause of dive injury and death. In 2008, DAN reported that 1.2% of all dives were complicated by problems with buoyancy and/or rapid ascent. These problems were of sufficient magnitude to justify an incident report to DAN. In 2006, there were 32 reported fatalities from breath holding during a rapid ascent.
