Beneath the waves of Lake Michigan, off the shores of Chicago rests many lost ships and airplanes that tell important parts of Chicago's maritime history. Most of these ships and airplanes remained lost to time until a small company, A&T Recovery, surveyed the floor of the Lake's southern basin in order to retrieve the historically significant aircraft that had lost during the aircraft carrier training operations of World War II.

On May 5, 1993 Allan Olson, Taras Lyssenko, and Scott Lyssenko located the resting place of a TBF Avenger Torpedo Bomber, Bureau Number 06064. 06064 may never be recovered, but it is part of a great story to be told. The airplane had crash landed on December 17, 1943 while being used for Aircraft Carrier Qualification Training by then Ensign Grant C. Young. (see presentation below).

In 1942 an ambitious project to qualify Navy pilots for Aircraft carrier landings and take-offs began at Navy Pier, Chicago. Two former passenger liners the Sea and Bee and the Greater Buffalo were to become the U.S.S. Wolverine and the U.S.S. Sable. The superstructures were removed and makeshift flattops were installed.
