Time leaks out while life leaks in. Selling a house is kind of weird. Our house has been on the market about two months. There hasn't been a lack of interest: we've accepted four offers so far. One went up in steam during the night. The next was from someone in China with a fake bank account (what sort of scam leads to bogus house offer? We wondered). When that one failed, our own contingency offer also fell to pieces, so it was back to square one in the search for our new home as well. One of the reason...

Time leaks out while life leaks in. It started with cookies. Yesterday I had a ham crisis. I had defrosted something labeled ham roast. By the butcher who cut up our pig (yes! A whole half-pig, our meat all coming from the same humanely and locally raised animal) and planned to cook it for breakfast. Too bad I didn't know that what is called ham. This whole process got me to thinking about how far I've come in my cooking skills. Which brings me to: my mom. It was much more what she didn't. She let me mak...

Time leaks out while life leaks in. In the leafy treetops. It's the first thing I'm aware of as I drift into consciousness, pushing happiness buttons in me before I'm even properly awake. The breeze flows through the open window, and also wafting through is the sound of birds cheerfully singing good morning to the sun, to each other, and to all the world. And just because I can hear them, they are singing to me too. Hysterical Mousse: A Return Post. An excellent dinner, darling. But some people are just ...

Time leaks out while life leaks in. This is me, back after having mostly (? Recovered from switching to Daylight Savings. Gets me every time, dangit. More on Pride and Prejudice. I wrote a bit earlier on the different versions of this story, each of which I have watched multiple times. (And read multiple times too, of course! Here are those moments for me:. As for the book itself, well- perhaps it is not fair to it to drag it in amongst the interpretations. But I may as well say that one of my favori...

Serial Experiment: February 2014
http://thescottishplay.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Time leaks out while life leaks in. What is it with these so-called "play dates" anyway? When I was a kid, there was no such thing. If I wanted to play with a friend, I called her on the phone and asked her if I could come play. Then she came to play. Or I went to her house. If arrangements got complicated, sometimes I put my mom on the phone with her mom. But mostly I worked my own stuff out. At the end of dinner. Me: [to the kids] There are two apple slices left with your names on them! Maybe that part...

Serial Experiment: January 2014

Time leaks out while life leaks in. This story began before Christmas. Hopefully, it ended today. Plumber: You have feet and feet of eggshells blocking up your kitchen pipe! Me: [sheepishly] Okay, no eggshells. Plumber clears out pipes]. A few days later. Me: Hi, Plumber! Sink is blocked again. Me: So, I have a layer of eggshells underneath my house now? Let's fix your pipe so the sink will drain. A few weeks later. It's my lucky day! Pipe is fixed. [for hours and hours]. Also, a few weeks ago, she asked...

Time leaks out while life leaks in. A story of Spring. On a side note, it still amazes me when I remember my thought processes as a child, how difficult and big everything seemed: oodles of things I now regard as No Big Deal. My parents didn't give us Easter baskets because- as I recall- they wished to direct our attentions to the more spiritual side of Easter. I'm not sure that it worked out quite that way, though, since I continued to long for an Easter basket of my own. What's wrong with the name you ...

Serial Experiment: Turkey Soup
http://thescottishplay.blogspot.com/2014/12/turkey-soup.html
Time leaks out while life leaks in. One of the things I love about Thanksgiving is the leftovers. Mmmmm, leftovers. And that's not all! I like getting all I can out of Mr. Turkey. The day I make stock from the bones is a nice day. I dunno, something about a pot simmering on the stove makes home feel extra cozy. Today the soup had onion, celery and peas in the broth and it turned out pretty nice. No surprise the house smells like turkey . . . delicious echoes of last week. Lady Macbeth (that's me).

Time leaks out while life leaks in. When the pie was opened. On Monday night I woke in the dark with a headache so bad I could not stay in bed. There are plenty of people who wrangle with headaches of great magnitude on a regular basis, but I am not one. In my life I have only had one headache on a similar scale, many years ago and induced by medicine- so I'm not sure it even counts. It was a beautiful sound. Why does my left heel crack every summer as I travel? Today is the longest day of the year:.

Serial Experiment: Here comes the sun
http://thescottishplay.blogspot.com/2015/01/here-comes-sun.html
Time leaks out while life leaks in. Here comes the sun. My birthday is in January. Where I grew up, Januarys are nearly always cold- bright and cold. Especially my birthday. Here on the west coast, January is dark. Dark and gloomy. Gloom and doomy. Beatrice (the sister I live closest to now! Here's to a sunny year: Happy Birthday to Me. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Lady Macbeth (that's me). Macbeth (that's the guy I'm married to). Katharina (name from Taming of the Shrew), my daughter.
