Sean in Nigeria

A New York lawyer spends six months researching street vendors and the informal economy on a Fulbright grant in Lagos, Nigeria. Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Sean in New York. After nearly seven months in six countries on three continents, my trip is over. I am back in New York, back in my apartment, and back at work. I haven't had much time to reflect, but it was an amazing trip that gave me the chance to expand my own mind while making (I hope) some small difference on a global scale. Thursday, July 23, 2009.

Sean in Nigeria: Corruption, corruption, what's your function?

http://www.seaninnigeria.blogspot.com/2009/07/corruption-corruption-whats-your.html

A New York lawyer spends six months researching street vendors and the informal economy on a Fulbright grant in Lagos, Nigeria. Monday, July 13, 2009. Corruption, corruption, what's your function? President Obama is huge in Nigeria, and folks here were quite miffed that he went to Ghana, their much smaller neighbor, for his first trip to Africa. But these choices. That was the whole point. The real problem is with the billions of dollars that get siphoned off by corrupt politicians every year. Nigeri...

Sean in Nigeria: Healthy living

http://www.seaninnigeria.blogspot.com/2009/07/healthy-living.html

A New York lawyer spends six months researching street vendors and the informal economy on a Fulbright grant in Lagos, Nigeria. Wednesday, July 8, 2009. One word I hear used a lot by Lagosians is "environment." I even started to wonder if the Sierra Club had been doing some covert recruiting here. But Nigerians don't use the word the same way Americans usually do, when we refer to things like clean air, healthy wetlands, and thriving forests. They mean, "is there trash on the ground? So which is worse?

A New York lawyer spends six months researching street vendors and the informal economy on a Fulbright grant in Lagos, Nigeria. Friday, July 17, 2009. Well, I finally finished my report and gave my presentation at the US Embassy yesterday. It was a huge success. More than 100 people showed up - lawyers, professors, microcredit. Types, street vendors, and government officials. Ben Akabueze. The Lagos State Commissioner. Foundation staff, everything went off without a hitch. I gave my powerpoint.

Sean in Nigeria: When life gives you oranges

http://www.seaninnigeria.blogspot.com/2009/06/blog-post.html

A New York lawyer spends six months researching street vendors and the informal economy on a Fulbright grant in Lagos, Nigeria. Sunday, June 28, 2009. When life gives you oranges. One of my best memories of. Is of drinking fresh-squeezed orange juice from a vendor in. S main plaza. In. I saw hundreds of men, like this guy. Selling the same thing. Do you not like fresh orange juice? So I ordered one online a couple months ago and had Mom and Dad ship it to me here in. And its starting to look like one 15 ...

Sean in Nigeria: Long arms of the law

http://www.seaninnigeria.blogspot.com/2009/07/long-arms-of-law.html

A New York lawyer spends six months researching street vendors and the informal economy on a Fulbright grant in Lagos, Nigeria. Sunday, July 5, 2009. Long arms of the law. One reason I'm optimistic that the KAI raids against street vendors here will eventually stop (or at least slow down) is that they are such horrible public spectacles. I was on board a bus waiting to leave Ojota. The officers let her go. I guess they did not have the heart to haul her into the "Black Maria" paddy wagon. Kabissa: Space ...

Something Delightful: Dainty Carnivores

Creative cooking in Troy, New York with locally-sourced ingredients. Saturday, April 4, 2015. Roast beef and rocket sandwiches. Red and white endive leaves with Trader Joe's spinach and kale greek yogurt dip. For Saturday breakfast, I took all of the crusts and separated them from the bits of roast beef and greens. I made an omelet with the roast beef and greens, and fed the crusts to the birds. Everyone was happy! Mini chocolate cupcakes with buttercream frosting and caramel sauce. My friend, Pete.

Creative cooking in Troy, New York with locally-sourced ingredients. Monday, March 30, 2015. Hands to work, hearts to God. There are two Shaker communities near where we live in Troy, New York. One of them is in the Berkshires, the Hancock Shaker Village, and the other one is in Albany/Colonie. We went to visit shortly after moving here. Aside from their sturdy and simple but beautiful furniture and the song "Tis a Gift to be Simple, Tis a Gift to be Free.". 1/2 tsp lemon peel. 3/4 tsp cream of tartar.

Creative cooking in Troy, New York with locally-sourced ingredients. Wednesday, February 5, 2014. When we lived in Park Slope, invitations to pot luck parties were always accom-panied by: "please bring something other than hummous! People often commented on gatherings at the Prospect Park bandshell by saying: "I wonder how many pounds of hummous are in this park tonite? Have you experienced this? Something Delightful: St. Pat's by Lamplight

http://mysticgypsypickles.blogspot.com/2010/03/st-pats-by-lamplight.html

Creative cooking in Troy, New York with locally-sourced ingredients. Wednesday, March 17, 2010. St Pat's by Lamplight. The most unique thing about this year's meal was the whole wheat soda bread. I found a recipe. That claimed to produce little confetti shamrocks when you sliced the bread. And it did! The sunflower seeds react somehow to the dough when it sits and then bakes in such a way that the seeds turn green! 1 3/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour. 2 teaspoons baking soda. 1 3/4 teaspoons salt.

Creative cooking in Troy, New York with locally-sourced ingredients. Saturday, April 4, 2015. When the owner of a local sweets shop, Sue of Sweet Sue's, joined the board, I had to ask: what was I doing wrong? I beat the heck out of the frosting like my mother taught me, but it always separates. 1 lb butter, a bit warmer than room temperature. 8 oz whipping cream. http://mysticgypsypickles.blogspot.com/2015/03/st-pattys-sourdough.html

Creative cooking in Troy, New York with locally-sourced ingredients. Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Another winning St. Patrick's Day recipe! This one adds sourdough to the soda bread, and raisins (or currants) and walnuts to the traditional caraway seeds. I also added sunflower seeds, which sometimes turn a little green during the baking process. I found this recipe. On a sourdough blog compilation. This is fantastic as a toasted breakfast bread, served on the side of soup, or just as a snack with some tea.

http://mysticgypsypickles.blogspot.com/2014/05/herbed-pizza.html

Creative cooking in Troy, New York with locally-sourced ingredients. Sunday, May 25, 2014. I've been experi-menting a lot with pizza doughs lately. The mush-rooms at the Troy Farmer's Market have really been the inspiration. Sunday nights have become pizza night in our house, and each one has been a little different. This dough is a keeper, although the original recipe didn't have salt or pepper, which made it a bit blander than I would have liked. Rosemary Parmesan Pizza Dough. 1 tsp dry yeast. Pickle a...

Sean's Trip to Paris

Sean's Trip to Paris. April 15, 2010. So I realize it has been a while since I have shown signs of existence on this blog. Let me explain why. Thankfully, my sanity was refreshed over Easter, mid-way through crunch time. A friend of mine here in France invited me and another Canadian girl (who figures earlier in this blog as the Carleton student who met my mother), to stay at her family house in the French countryside outside of Chartres, 2 hours Southwest of Paris. What an amazing weekend! My classes di...
