Unexpected Productions Team Building and Applied Improv. Home - Team Building. The Dark Forest Of SadProv. Ldquo;Nothing is as poor and melancholy as an art that is interested in itself and not its subject.” –Santayana. Ever watched or performed in a vague, low-energy, hesitant, abstract scene that seemed like it might be about something important, if the audience could just keep their eyes open long enough to be sure? Entering The Dark Forest. The improvisers are bored! Some improvisers decide that all ...

Challenge yourself to fail. | An Hour of Play
https://anhourofplay.wordpress.com/2015/03/30/challenge-yourself-to-fail
An Hour of Play. An Hour of Play: thoughts on improv (and sometimes writing). Challenge yourself to fail. March 30, 2015. This is a post I’ve been wanting to write for a while now, and ironically, the reason I haven’t is because I want it to be perfect. I’m disobeying the damned title of the post! So here, finally, we go. I’ll give some examples. Mike Christensen, Enzo Zammuto, and Kate Jaeger (photo by Todd Gardiner). On the way out of the theater after the show, I said to Kate how happy I was that she&...

Ain’t going back to Barton Hollow | An Hour of Play

An Hour of Play. An Hour of Play: thoughts on improv (and sometimes writing). Ain’t going back to Barton Hollow. August 7, 2012. I have a lot of things I’m thinking about lately. Too many to condense into one post. And, at this very, very specific moment, I don’t have time to write up any one of them, even all stream-of-consciousness (which I’m beginning to think is the way to go). But! Could I torture some relation between this song and any of the cornucopia of topics in my head? From → theater. The pri...

About | An Hour of Play
https://anhourofplay.wordpress.com/about
An Hour of Play. An Hour of Play: thoughts on improv (and sometimes writing). In 1986, I was fortunate enough to be part of an amazing cast of improvisers. At Northwestern University. We performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival that year, and then I left improv behind for 23 years. I jumped back in with a class at Wing-It Productions, and haven’t stopped since, performing with Wing-It, Unexpected Productions, and my own group, Interrobang? Leave one →. Five Do’s | An Hour of Play
https://anhourofplay.wordpress.com/2015/03/22/five-dos
An Hour of Play. An Hour of Play: thoughts on improv (and sometimes writing). March 22, 2015. Do’s, however, I think are more helpful. Because if one isn’t actually doing a Do, the thought doesn’t arise of having broken a rule. A do, just like a don’t, isn’t something that is happening all the time. When a don’t happens, it pulls up the negative internal critic, which tends to hang around for a while. When a do happens, it might pull up a Woo! From → improv. Larr; A few improv posts. A few improv posts | An Hour of Play
https://anhourofplay.wordpress.com/2014/08/25/a-few-improv-posts
An Hour of Play. An Hour of Play: thoughts on improv (and sometimes writing). A few improv posts. August 25, 2014. Not sure why I didn’t just cross-post both here and at Around the Block. When I started posting there. And I’m not posting there all that much, honestly. But here are links to a few improv posts I made there this year. Two of them include improv exercises. Jan 26: Why Improv? Feb 4: Use Badprov to Make Goodprov. Jul 7: I’ve Seen a Lot of Ass Cracks. No exercise, but bonus video from SNL).

Hope to be around more this year | An Hour of Play
https://anhourofplay.wordpress.com/2014/01/26/hope-to-be-around-more-this-year
An Hour of Play. An Hour of Play: thoughts on improv (and sometimes writing). Hope to be around more this year. January 26, 2014. Last year was just a crazy busy year for me: three long-form shows, ComedySportz, playwrighting for 14/48, a new job, lots of travel, and just life in general. Hoping to get back in the habit of writing again this year. To that end, new improv blog post at Around the Block: Why Improv? From → improv. Larr; Ain’t going back to Barton Hollow. An Hour of Play. An Hour of Play: thoughts on improv (and sometimes writing). Three shows to see. July 19, 2012. Dammit, I really should be writing more about improv (or anything for that matter) instead of just dropping in when it’s time to pimp shows. That said, I have three shows coming up that are all kickass. So you should go. Y’know? Not because I want an audience (although, of course I do), but because you’d have a great time. Fair? So, in order of performance date:. Go see any of ’em! June 4, 2012.

Improv blog roundup | An Hour of Play
https://anhourofplay.wordpress.com/2012/08/01/improv-blog-roundup
An Hour of Play. An Hour of Play: thoughts on improv (and sometimes writing). August 1, 2012. If blogs were cows, this would be the perfect image for this post. Instead, it just sort of makes me want a Marlboro. This, in many ways, is what got the blog summit rolling. There was a post by a San Francisco improviser that numerous Seattle folk weighed in on, mostly in the comments. This. Was the one blog post that was directly spawned by it, though. A Touchy Subject. And that’s it for now. Hopeful...AinR...

Heroes | An Hour of Play
https://anhourofplay.wordpress.com/2014/06/06/heroes
An Hour of Play. An Hour of Play: thoughts on improv (and sometimes writing). June 6, 2014. Because of the 70th anniversary of D-Day today, and events in Seattle yesterday, heroes are much on my mind. Two, specifically. Later in the war, he served in the Pacific Theater, helping to secure Japan after the Japanese Instrument of Surrender. I can’t begin to summarize how proud I am to be his grandson, and how much I look forward to celebrating his 100th birthday with him in Williamsburg in August. The priva...
