Seattle Tall Poppy

Taking a deep dive into my Year of Meat. I'm currently stuck on hamburgers, and all their incarnations. Nostalgia hit hard one night, recalling the burger of my childhood. Ground beef, a packet of Lipton Onion Soup Mix, grilled and topped with caramelized onions. The craving was so powerful, I left the house in the middle of a rainstorm, and secured ingredients minutes before the grocery store closed. It was good, but not as good as I remembered. And with that, my latest obsession was born. My friend Mar...

Seattle Tall Poppy: 2015: The Year of Meat

http://seattletallpoppy.blogspot.com/2014/12/2015-year-of-meat.html

2015: The Year of Meat. If a picture is worth 1,000 words, let's just say, this is a preview of the year ahead.my Year of Meat. Oh sure, I've written about America's best butcher. Visited a pioneering lamb rancher. And begged my way into a restaurant kitchen. Only to find headcheese on the day's prep list. And a handful of times, I had the opportunity to judge Cochon555. And the American Lamb Jam competitions. As my friend Rocky says, "This isn't my first rodeo.". What was the missing element? A chance e...

Seattle Tall Poppy: What Are You Waiting For?

http://seattletallpoppy.blogspot.com/2008/10/what-are-you-waiting-for.html

What Are You Waiting For? Home hospice visits, a house cleaner, and their case worker all make frequent visits. The irony is, I learn this, standing in what remained of her garden. Cleaning out the detritus, I learn more about her than I had in the four years since I’ve lived here. It was tempered by a persistent stalker, who tracked me down at the office. And to top it off, my father became gravely ill around Christmas, prompting the holiday trip to their home in Florida. Act with a sense of urgency.

Seattle Tall Poppy: Not for the Faint of Heart

http://seattletallpoppy.blogspot.com/2006/08/not-for-faint-of-heart.html

Not for the Faint of Heart. The following post contains graphic content not suitable for those faint of heart.or stomach. If you are happy not knowing where your meat comes from, please do not scroll down. Seriously. This past weekend, I had the opportunity to work in Porcella's kitchen. To say that I was nervous and filled with apprehension is an understatement. You see, on the agenda for the day's prep was. When it was clearly displayed in the. When I ran into Noah and he agreed to let me come play in ...

Seattle Tall Poppy: The Interpretive Feast

http://seattletallpoppy.blogspot.com/2009/04/interpretive-feast.html

Last fall I was introduced to Professor Britt Yamamoto. Who teaches a master’s level class on the Politics of Food and Eating. Within seconds, I prodded him with questions about the class. "What topics are you covering? What's the required reading? How is the class structured? He escaped my questions (read: interrogation) by sending me a copy of the syllabus. Class readings probed serious issues surrounding agribusiness, sustainability, food sovereignty, biotechnology, and commodified food. And then ther...

Seattle Tall Poppy: A Back Room Taste of Mexico

http://seattletallpoppy.blogspot.com/2008/11/back-room-taste-of-mexico.html

A Back Room Taste of Mexico. For me, the ultimate thrill is when I get a chance to bring people together in a meaningful way. Over the past few years, I've hosted a number of dinners, cocktail parties and brunches in a sincere effort to put relevant people in the same room and help foster community. The food biz is varied and diverse and while paths may cross from time to time, I've become much more deliberate about providing introductions. Monday evenings have become my favorite night for parties. Space...

Stops & starts along the journey to Terra Madre | Wanderlust Road

https://wanderlustroad.wordpress.com/2010/09/09/terramadre

Flavors, stories and snapshots from travels along the wanderlust road. Stops and starts along the journey to Terra Madre. This entry was posted on September 9, 2010, in culinaria. It’s something I’ve told myself I should attend regardless of what it takes to get there –. The cost, the time away from work, etc. 8211; to convincing myself that it can wait another two years (and hoping that it will indeed continue)… and all the way back again. What’s all this about? hardtack at sea: June 2006

http://hardtackatsea.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html

Landlubber musings. Local food culture. Culinary adventures. Occasional neuroses. Tuesday, June 27. Meet the Marlboro Man, aka Tony Bourdain. He doesn't have a cowboy hat and he's way cruder than the iconic billboard figure we're familiar with. But I bet that cowboy never really chain smoked those coffin nails, unapologetically, quite the way Bourdain does. I shouldn't be telling you this, but I smoked one of his Marlboros the other night. But first I stole it. I sure don't know. My buddy and pastry chef...

Landlubber musings. Local food culture. Culinary adventures. Occasional neuroses. Tuesday, September 26. I remember hearing my fellow blogistas tell me that they loved the writing but hated the pressure of having to produce all the time. That their readers would start whining if more than a week went by without a post. I, on the other hand, have resisted all pressure from my 4 readers and have produced nary a word in over 2 months. I apologize. Is it now excuse time? Posted by Chef @ 1:06 PM.
