What To See and Explore. What to See and Explore. One of the jewels of the Crystal Coast lies just a short 15 minute ride from mainland Beaufort. Stretching nine miles in length running west to east, this island has it all. It is home to approximately 120 wild Banker Ponies and the best shelling location on the east coast. People inhabited Shackleford Banks until 1899. On the eastern end of the Banks during the 18th and 19th centuries, there existed the fishing and whaling community named Diamond City.
