The SS. Nairung was an ammunition ship sailing from Durban to Bombay via Dar Es Salaam when she was torpedoed by the German U Boat U86 2. Able Seaman Douglas Hursell. Able Seaman Douglas Hursell. Was my childhood friend, an 18 year old DEMS Gunner aboard the Nairung. His parents never discovered how he met his death; just that his ship had been. Lost with all hands". Penang Jan.1944 Officers of U188. Last moments. Midnight. . U-188 sailed from Penang on 1st. January 1944. She sailed between the Maldive Islands and at dawn on 20th Jan. sighted the top masts S.S.Fort Buckingham. After a failed submerged attack with three torpedoes she pursued the freighter throughout the day. At midnight with a surface attack firing two torpedoes. She sank the Fort Buckingham; the first of seven ships during the voyage back to Bordeaux. Proudly powered by Weebly.

July 1943 South of the Azores U-188 taking supplies from U-155. German supply ship "BRAKE". On June 30th. 1943 U-188 left Lorient with a full crew and 22 torpedoes. On13th. July the German supply vessel U-487 was sunk by the US Navy. As a result U-188 was ordered to proceed to Rendezvous with U155 South of the Azores in order to obtain sufficient fuel and supplies to round the Cape of Good Hope and rendezvous with the German supply ship "BRAKE" south east of Madagascar.
