SMPTE Simply: Drop Frame Time Code. On October 15, 2013. Why 29.97 FPS (frames per second)? Black & white television broadcast at 30 frames per second. A beautiful, easy ratio to work with. When color TV was introduced there were major problems with phasing between the color carrier signal and the audio carrier signal, making the picture unwatchable. The fix?
