True stories and fiction. June 21, 2015. I would never have learned to drive if it hadn’t been for my father. He taught me in his girlfriend’s Ford station wagon. My parents were divorced by then, and every time I got behind the wheel of my mother’s vehicle, she would spend the entire trip gasping, gripping her seat, panicking, nagging, and occasionally screaming for me to pull over. It was more than either of us could handle. Cars and driving are not really my mom’s thing. Maybe this sounds petty, but I...

True stories and fiction. Eat your epic fails. December 29, 2014. December 29, 2014. For the longest time, people kept telling me that I needed a hobby and I figured, what better pastime could there be than reading and writing? Sometimes you’ve got to really produce something palatable just to get paid. So you can’t j...But I...

True stories and fiction. Can’t complain ;). May 31, 2015. May 31, 2015. I told Oliver yesterday that I had signed him and Annabelle up for a storytelling camp in July. For two hours each day of the one-week session, the kids will be writing and acting out their own stories. Sounds fun, right? You would have thought I’d enrolled him in military school a few hundred miles away. I did want to eat it, though. I was thinking of enjoying it in my quiet classroom after the luncheon and speeches were over.

True stories and fiction. February 20, 2016. I woke up at 3:30 am, which for some reason I do on most Friday mornings, and by 7 am I had almost blinded myself by accidentally using hydrogen peroxide instead of saline solution when I tried to put my contact lenses in. Worst eye pain I have ever had. Worse than pepper spray, and please don’t ask how I know that. I teach one of those classes that’s aligned with a standardized test. To pass this test, students must be knowledgeable about traditional sent...
