One student is the interviewer and the other is the interviewee. The students loved using the microphone! The reader may choose a fiction, nonfiction, or poetry book to read. The other student uses a checklist to provide feedback to the reader. The students also listened to A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln. Readi...

Wednesday, February 9, 2011. This is a picture of our theme wall. We just finished our Penguin Unit. We studied the text structure of nonfiction books, we compared nonfiction and fiction books, and we learned how to determine importance from a nonfiction book. We also studied fiction books. We compared stories by the same author and we retold the stories we read by writing in our response journals. We will move on to our America Unit next week! Posted by Rosemarie Bushong. Mrs. Bushong's Second Grade: May 2011
http://secondinshawnee.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Fun in the Sun! We had so much fun today on our Beach Day! Even though the sky was cloudy, we pretended we were on the beach on a sunny day! Then we played a relay game with our second grade buddies in Mrs. Loftis's class. We put all our shoes in a pile. Each student had to run to the pile, find and put on their shoes, and then run back and tag the next person. We won by a hair! We then ate our popsicles on our beach towels. It is hard to believe we only have two days left! The ser...

http://secondinshawnee.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Friday, October 28, 2011. Bat and Pumpkin Nonfiction Unit. We began our nonfiction unit by learning about bats. After reviewing nonfiction text, the students completed a bubble map to recall all the things they knew about bats. Then as a class we listed all the things we knew about bats and all the things we wanted to learn. We read many bat books and recorded what we learned. After reading Scholastic News-In the Dark of the Night, the students drew a diagram of a bat. Ready Freddy is always a favorite!

Mrs. Bushong's Second Grade: Language Fun
http://secondinshawnee.blogspot.com/2011/04/language-fun.html
Tuesday, April 5, 2011. We started our lesson with a discussion of weather idioms from our Scholastic News. An idiom is an expression that means something different from what it seems to mean. We then read some other books with examples of idioms. We read the idioms and then discussed what they really meant. These books were written and illustrated by Fred Gwynne- better known as Herman Munster on the Munsters! Last, the students wrote and illustrated an idiom of their choosing. May 23, 2011 at 7:12 AM.
