Getting around commuting | seeinginthecity

https://seeinginthecity.wordpress.com/2014/07/02/getting-around-commuting

There are 4 main ways to get around Nairobi: by car, public bus/matatu, motorcycle (bodaboda) or foot. Bodaboda used to refer to bicycles and was apparently imported from Tanzania) but nowadays in Nairobi parlance it means motorcycle. Other less popular means of transport are the bicycle (rare nowadays), taxis, and tuk-tuks. And what exactly is a tuk-tuk? I believe in Asia they are called rickshaws. I have always just thought of them as scooters with a body and passenger space.Like the difference...So, s...

The back side of Nairobi | seeinginthecity

https://seeinginthecity.wordpress.com/2014/08/16/the-back-side-of-nairobi

The back side of Nairobi. Okay this is not a guide to all the downtown areas of the city, just my experience or a glimpse of it. My first recollection of this part of the city was the warning (directed at others) not to go to River Road. River Road was the place of violent muggings and conmen and all the bad things the city could hold. So I explored River Road, in daylight (somewhat fearfully). I pleasantly discovered that people work, and live, on this ominous street. Then as Kenya’s film-industry...

September | 2014 | seeinginthecity

https://seeinginthecity.wordpress.com/2014/09

Monthly Archives: September 2014. I owe this to Christine Hassler and Shonte Taylor: the naming of a time in life, somewhere in the 20s and 30s, where things don’t make sense. Something like a midlife crisis. The neuroscientist (Taylor) says our brains are still growing until our mid and late 20s, somewhat explaining the crisis. So this is the time when we question things, wonder if we’re on the right track, like me. We can leave our jobs, even travel, look for ourselves, our life path. The Coast: nothing b...

October | 2014 | seeinginthecity

https://seeinginthecity.wordpress.com/2014/10

Monthly Archives: October 2014. An important part of the average Nairobi girl’s life(not all). The other day I found myself in Kenyatta Market (the famous making hair place in Nairobi, even models are said to go there to do their hair). Ok, I was in Ngummo and decided to do my hair over other important, pressing appointments, and at the risk of disappointing quite a few people. It starts raining lightly,at first .madame proprietor is back, almost ready to go.She gets a companion to walk with her&...Anoth...

Losing It

My mind, my waist, these many unwanted pounds. It's all right here for you to see. 2011 A - Z. Thursday, December 15, 2011. And Then He Kissed Me. You know that I went on a date with The Engineer. Monday came and he lamented having to go to his company's Christmas Dinner alone. Naturally I assumed that he would ask me to accompany him. (Who am I if not a girl that jumps to ridiculous conclusions? Only a fool would say no. We've talked everyday and made plans for Thursday (tonight! Could I be there by 7p?

Seeing Inside Out

Musings related to my yoga practice, study and teaching. Friday, November 21, 2014. Love Contentment = Gratitude. When asked, "How do I love myself? Thich Nhat Hanh began with these words: "You breathe in. This is an act of love." Can you allow yourself to believe this? Can you begin turning towards yourself with love simply by breathing in? There is a depth of acceptance and compassion here that melts my heart. The essential quality of breathing in is such a gift to the self - the living body! And with ...

Monday, December 27, 2010. When christmas is over, we all know it is time for some new year resolution! I have been doing resolution, for the new year, the past 5 years or so. But sad to say, they are always, unfulfilled. Is it that when you get older, your new year resolutions get lesser? It used to be from A-Z, 1-99. With only 4more days to the end of 2010. Let's see what I hoped for, at the start of this year. Stay healthy, everyone. Adapt well and fit in nicely, make new friends, do well in school.
