Thoughts and Stories from my Seldom Boring Life

Thoughts and Stories from my Seldom Boring Life. Tuesday, November 8, 2011. A Day in My Life. Woke up early yesterday because I had a meeting across town. Put on dressy clothes. Waited for 20 minutes at the main street for an empty seat in the small sedans that serve as public transport in Santo Domingo (7 people in a 1987 Toyota Corolla is a typical "carro publico"). After finally finding an available car, began the journey with a not-small women nearly on my lap. Walked for 20 minutes. 8226;Don’t...

Thoughts and Stories from my Seldom Boring Life: Misisi

http://www.seldomboring.blogspot.com/2009/07/misisi.html

Thoughts and Stories from my Seldom Boring Life. Friday, July 3, 2009. Greetings loyal readers (I think we're up to 15 professed readers of this blog, although the "followers" list to the right only says 5),. Below is a report about a new program we've been working on in Misisi, a slum in Lusaka. This place really is as bad as described (trust me, I wrote it). Kids Alive’s “Families Together” Program in Misisi. Posted by Jonathan Coleman. July 3, 2009 at 6:55 PM. Jon, I love this. Keep up the good work!

Thoughts and Stories from my Seldom Boring Life: January 2009

http://www.seldomboring.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Thoughts and Stories from my Seldom Boring Life. Saturday, January 10, 2009. Christmas thoughts (a few weeks late). An important part of surviving the type of life I find myself in is gaining. The ability to have gladness in the daily successes and constant joys, while. Being surrounded by seemingly hopeless images and suffocating scenes of. Despair. I must learn to celebrate with little boys who have been given. Hope, to sing and dance with joy, as they do, all the while knowing that. Chance to receive ...

Thoughts and Stories from my Seldom Boring Life. Saturday, September 20, 2008. The last 2 weeks. A quick update of what I’ve been doing these last 2 weeks…My boss, Francis, finally did arrive. Unfortunately, he only stayed for 6 days before heading off to America to speak in churches and raise money. In the few days he was here, however, we had a good time together visiting the 3 program sites around Khartoum and gaining a better understanding of what Kids Alive-Sudan is all about. So, if they ever retur...

Thoughts and Stories from my Seldom Boring Life. Monday, October 10, 2011. A master networker/researcher I am not, but I have learned a thing or two during my short time in Santo Domingo. 8226;Make friends however you can. For example: I recently made a really important contact while meeting with a group of “couchsurfers” in a bar. 8226;Dress to impress. My current reality is that I am very obviously a foreigner, I am young, and I speak Spanish more like a street vendor than an academic or business p...

Life Experiences: September 2010

Thursday, September 23, 2010. Look What I Found in the Library! I have been looking and looking for these sticky numbers for the last few weeks and finally found them! A second cool discovery, The Booklover's Repair Kit: First Aid for Home Libraries. Now, although I've never classified myself as a booklover, I do love to be organized and tidy and do things right. This kit was tucked away in a cabinet in the library and boy has it been needed! Spanish Class- Level 3b. Spanish Class- Level 3b :). The littl...

Game time for the younger kids! Cheering on the Green team! Even our teachers participated! Helping kids memorize Bible verses. The 8th graders prepared and sang a couple of songs for the kids. Saturday, we helped continue build the wall around the Care Center property. Taking a little break. And we are done!

Life Experiences: December 2010

http://julieannebailey.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 24, 2010. A few pictures for sponsors :). Thank you to all of you who sponsor kids thru Kids Alive (and for other organizations for that matter) and who sponsor me of course! Every year we have a separate Christmas party for the kids who have sponsors at Anija that don't also live at the Ark. We have about 150 kids who have sponsors. We had lunch together, sang Christmas carols, played a couple of games, and opened presents! Waiting to go into the cafeteria to see what the surprise is.

Life Experiences: From the DR to Arizona

http://julieannebailey.blogspot.com/2011/06/from-dr-to-arizona.html

Saturday, June 11, 2011. From the DR to Arizona. I'm moving back to Arizona. And a little sooner than I expected)! God has graciously opened doors for me to be the 5th grade teacher at Chandler Christian School next year and I am excited! There are so many things running through my mind right now, I'm not sure where to begin. How can you help me during this process? Lastly, I would love to reconnect with all of you who have been so faithful in supporting and praying for me during my time in the Dominican...

Life Experiences: August 2010

http://julieannebailey.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 29, 2010. Update on Construction at Anija. Here's a couple of pictures of Anija's campus. Our new soccer field (almost)! Lots of progress has been made but there's still a few more things to do before the kids can start playing on it. The two classrooms upstairs were finished this summer by work teams and a crew of Dominicans. The seventh and eighth graders are using these classrooms. I BOUGHT A MOTORCYCLE! And when you think of me, please pray for safety! Thursday, August 26, 2010. Here a...

Sunday, March 27, 2011. What You May Find When Doing Laundry. So I woke up early to do laundry this morning and look what I found. This was seriously the biggest cockroach I had ever seen. I'm so glad it didn't put up much of a fight. Saturday, March 26, 2011. Hanging Out with the Kids. Squatting in their little room to take a picture. This is all the floor space in the room). They love taking pictures :). Their little 'kitchen' (in the bedroom). Nehemias receiving a gift sent by one of his sponsors.

Life Experiences: El Maraton del Arca

http://julieannebailey.blogspot.com/2011/06/el-maraton-del-arca.html

Tuesday, June 21, 2011. El Maraton del Arca. Here's a few pictures from the Ark Maraton this weekend. There were four different routes and distances. One for each age group. I ran the longest route which was 3.85 miles. It's mostly Ark kids, staff, summer interns, and Kids Alive missionaries who participate. A few of us who ran. Melia was excited to run. Joshua wasn't so sure. He went to the start and then cried once they said, "Go! So his dad walked him back. :). June 22, 2011 at 3:11 PM.

Life Experiences: Two More Days...

http://julieannebailey.blogspot.com/2011/06/two-more-days.html

Wednesday, June 22, 2011. It's true, I only have 2 days left in the Dominican Republic. I fly back to Arizona THIS Friday! Here are some pictures to give you a glimpse of what I've been up to the past few days. Mallory is going to be a new missionary with Kids Alive here in Jarabacoa. Since she won't be coming until October, we decided it would be good for her to come for a week to 'learn the ropes' of what her responsibilities will be (Anija sponsorship and the library). Enjoyed huge mangoes. :). I can ...
