Palembangin': April 2010
http://katieinindo.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Friday, April 30, 2010. Oops, my apologies. Rudi’s behavior isn’t uncommon at all, though. All of my teachers smack students when they talk out of turn or play with their Rubik’s Cubes instead of listening. After a particularly frustrating class, I came back to the teachers’ lounge and said I was having some serious trouble getting kids to pay attention. “You have to pinch them,” Sry says. The thing is, it doesn’t. So I said thanks, but he...

9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Saturday, December 26, 2009. A bathroom blog. Toilet talk? Please accept my sincerest apologies, because I have been holding out on you. It occurred to me recently that I have yet to share with you the mildly terrifying adventure that is Indonesian bathrooms. I should have known some bathroom challenge was looming in my future long before I set foot in this country. Does that imply something about other toilets? I think I shrugged. A porce...

Palembangin': Marhabah celebration
http://katieinindo.blogspot.com/2010/05/marhabah-celebration.html
9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Sunday, May 23, 2010. Just five days left in Palembang, and I’m still having new experiences every day. Well, not. Day, but close. This weekend I went to a Marhabah celebration at Rudi’s family’s house. As a reminder, Rudi is another English teacher at my school. Technically, that’s when you’re supposed to have the ceremony, too—when the baby is a week old. But most people cut the baby’s hair off at a week and w...The ceremony at Rudi̵...

Palembangin': The Final Score
http://katieinindo.blogspot.com/2010/06/final-score.html
9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Friday, June 11, 2010. I’m home now. It’s wonderful and a little sad at the same time. My friend Jeff Laub sent me Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods, about hiking the Appalachian Trail, and being home reminds me a little of Bryson’s experience when he and his friend finally decided to go home:. 8220;‘Do you want to get a Coke? 8217; I said to Katz. There was a machine by the gas station door. 1 Take lots of pictures. Well, I’m not fl...

9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Wednesday, October 28, 2009. There is a bug hiding under my 4 key. Want to watch me try to kill him? He isn’t dead. He’s trying to make it to 5. He’s mocking me. Which leads me to an interesting question: why are there so many bugs on my desk? Yeah, the cockroaches and lizards suck, but I think everyone here will agree that the real nasty things are the tiny little ants. Thankfully, for the most part, they go where the food is. Obviously, ...

Kal in Kudus: November 2009
http://kalinkudus.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Kalada's Fulbright Journey in Indonesia. Sunday, November 15, 2009. This past week was probably the best teaching week so far! I taught my students about using the past tense with one of my all-time favorite songs, Remember the Time by Michael Jackson. After nine classes of playing the song back to back I know the song now, just as well as I did when I was a little boy. Already anticipating the response, the students answered with a resounding, "YES! Saturday, November 7, 2009. Or as we say in Indonesia:.
