Coastal Angler Tagging Cooperative. The Giant Sea Bass. The La Jolla Acoustic Array will start tracking the movements of these critically endangered giants in 2014. The project will improve our understanding of their spatial ecology as they return to La Jolla to spawn. Graduate student Lyall Bellquist retrieves a hydrophone from the La Jolla Array. Each hydrophone has the potential to contain over 100,000 detections of tagged fish. Support the largest and most valuable fishery in California.

Coastal Angler Tagging Cooperative. Researchers are tagging sevengill and soupfin sharks. The broadnose sevengill shark (. Is a temperate nearshore species that inhabits the kelp forests and rocky reefs of La Jolla and is named for having seven pairs of gill slits, as opposed to five pairs, which is most common in sharks. The sevengill is a large (up to 8 10 feet) and powerful predator that hunts other sharks and marine mammals, including leopard sharks and harbor seals. Coastal Angler Tagging Cooperative.

Coastal Angler Tagging Cooperative. First year of coastal bass tagging complete. We now have a fully operational array of underwater acoustic receivers that will allow us to monitor virtually the entire La Jolla kelp bed. We tagged 45 kelp bass and barred sand bass with acoustic transmitters that are being continuously detected by this array, and we plan to tag an additional 30 bass before the holidays.
