Research in Sensor Networks Using Device-Free Localization. Involves determining where someone is without needing to attach a device to the person. We use a wireless network of sensor nodes that transmit and receive RF signals, and exploit the fact that the human body affects the RF wave field. When a person is present, the nodes detect variances in the signals sent from other nodes. By processing this data with the appropriate algorithms, it's possible to determine where someone is.

Applications of device-free localization in the real world. What's the big deal about using RF sensor nodes to detect people? Can't you use video cameras, infrared, or simple "magic eye" light beams in doorways? Or heck, just get a dog that barks when someone's around. Yes, all that is fine. But cameras and infrared can't see through walls very well, doorway detectors can only tell if someone trips the detector going one way or the other, and who's going to feed the dog?
