Well I seem to be turning out these instruments at a pretty good rate. This one is close to finished as you can see. This shekere uses wood beads. It is my second wood bead shekere. This one is going to a friend and fellow musician, a saxophone and flute player I play jazz with. He liked the natural look of the wood beads. Links to this post. This shekere turned out to hav...

Goodbye Lisa Forman, I will miss you my friend. Farewell sweet Lisa, I will miss you my friend. Lisa Forman -12/8/64 7/7/2011. This is a very sad post for me to write. Lisa Forman was a huge influence on my percussion life here in San Francisco. She introduced me to Carlos Aldama's class where I met the local rumberos an...

Skin on Skin congas are probably the best congas being made. The design is so clean and advanced. So to say it was a bit daunting to drill some holes into my beautiful perfect congas is a bit of an understatement; I was terrified. I'm really happy with how it turned out. I had inspiration and some advice from Mark Sanders over at Fidel's Eyeglasses. He actually had owned a Skin on Skin requinto. When he sold it a while back. So cool! So my conga project is done, the handles work great, and I'm really hap...

This quartet was originally organized by Marco Rizo, the famous Cuban composer who gained immortality by penning Lucy's Theme from the I Love Lucy Show. Buying a set of congas: Artisan Conga Makers. Contemplating a purchase of an artisan-crafted set of congas can be exciting and fun. It can also be daunting and confusing. The first step is deciding whether or not you should buy a set of congas like this. Artisan crafted congas come with several advantages but there are also drawbacks. Another thing about handcrafted drums is they come with a waiting period. Are you the type of person that has the patience for that? Links to this post. Vintage congas made...
