콩나물밥 (Soybean Sprout Rice). A simple Korean comfort food that you can make in your rice cooker. It's a bit like bibimbap, except that the ingredients are cooked together, so the vegetable and meat flavors actually infuse the rice. Sadly, we still can't find reasonably-priced ricotta cheese to make real lasagna, but this Tex-Mex version is just enough to keep the cravings at bay. Thai Red Curry with Shrimp. Molten Chocolate Banana Muffins. Ease back into baking with a quick and simple treat. This quick, J...
Donburi (돈부리) - Restaurant Reviews & Recommendations by Seoul Taste
http://www.seoultaste.com/en/restaurants/donburi
There are lots of things on the menu, mostly okay, but just skip past it all and go straight for the salmon dishes! Reviewed by Annie Namba. On May 2, 2012. Hole in the wall, underground. hole in the ground? So the name's a little boring. Just "Donburi"? Could they be any less creative? Sure, we already reviewed our favorite donburi place. But we tried this one on a whim, and it was different enough to merit a new review. Plus, we don't come here for the donburi, really. After ordering, salad, side dishe...
울트라麺 (Ultramen) - Restaurant Reviews & Recommendations by Seoul Taste

Wintry winds got you down? A hot bowl of ramen will warm you right up. Reviewed by Annie Namba. On October 25, 2011 / Updated January 27, 2012. It's a hole-in-a-wall place, a bit off the main street. Now, the name is supposed to sound like Ultraman (you can tell by the decor) but with -men (the Japanese character meaning noodles), and while they do sound the same in Korean, the two sounds are very different to English speakers and the joke is lost. Try not to let this bother you too much. I ordered tonko...

Posts tagged ‘Lunch’. This quick, Japanese-y dish is a favorite in our house, and also serves as an excellent fridge-clearing dish. Make it even quicker by cheating a little and use a premade sauce. We won't judge. 김대감봉평메밀촌 교보타워점 (Bongpyeong Memil Chon). 김치불고기버거 (Kimchi Bulgogi Burger). Still, when I need my taco fix, Taco Rico is it! 김치볶음밥 (Kimchi Fried Rice). I recently found out that people go out to eat kimchi fried rice, and I couldn't believe it! This is an easy one to make at home. A classic Korea...

Posts tagged ‘Dinner’. 갓덴스시 강남점 (Gatten Sushi). Expats in Korea know how hard it can be to find decent sushi. This looks promising: one of Japan's famous conveyor belt sushi chains has opened its first location in Korea. 교동전선생 (논현점) (Jeon Seonsaeng). While the name "Fritter Teacher of Gyodong" is a bit comical when translated, sure enough, this. Chain store does seem to make the best jeon in town. 돼지불고기 (Spicy Pork Stir-Fry). Not your average Vietnamese restaurant! Celebrating a special occasion? When Ko...

Deep thoughts… or not. A release valve for my mind. June 16th, 2011 @ 12:46 pm. Annie and I went on a DMZ tour this past Saturday, June 11, which was hosted (and likely subsidized) by the Yeoksam Global Village Center, which I am quite familiar with because I attend Korean class there twice a week. And likely because of this familiarity, the center staff asked me to do a short writeup and share my thoughts. Thoughts on education, economics, politics, software, design, Korea and their various intersections.

Deep thoughts… or not. A release valve for my mind. Honolulu’s Doomed Rail Project. March 31st, 2011 @ 12:33 am. Honolulu’s rail project is in the news again today, which prompted me to think about it yet again. And the more I think about it, the less sense it makes to me. The original $4 billion budget seemed outlandish, and that budget later evolved to $5.5 billion. And even with that kind of budget, the project is expected to take decades to complete. 50 days after opening, Line 9 reached the 10 milli...

Deep thoughts… or not. A release valve for my mind. From iOS to Android: Problems and Solutions. April 21st, 2013 @ 6:22 pm. Within days, I could already tell that I wasn’t going back to my iPhone. The Nexus 4, while certainly not perfect, is by far the best phone I’ve ever owned. iOS 7 and the next iPhone will have to make a huge break from their current trajectory to bring me back, and that doesn’t appear likely. Now I realize that was nothing. The Nexus 4, despite having a 50% larger battery, can&...

Deep thoughts… or not. A release valve for my mind. Can a non-native speaker achieve native proficiency later in life? December 10th, 2010 @ 1:08 am. This is a question to which I am dedicating a significant portion of this lifetime. I’ve been studying Korean for well over 7 years now, but as any English native attempting to learn Japanese or Korean quickly discovers, these languages are as different from English as one could imagine. People are talking about, I bought a book a couple years ago containin...

Deep thoughts… or not. A release valve for my mind. August 23rd, 2011 @ 9:47 am. Seoul is currently all abuzz with what I’m told is its first-ever referendum: the issue of free school lunches. Problem is, I’m not sure people have considered even the most basic facts before forming an opinion. Now, in Seoul, where this issue is being debated, how many children are in this kind of situation, or something remotely close to it? I’m thinking 5% would be the absolute high end. Tales of a jew living in the orient and beyond. Greek Village Hip Hopping. August 12, 2015. August 12, 2015. When I first got to Spain and started tutoring Spanish kiddos, whenever I’d ask what they did the past weekend, or what they’re doing for the upcoming weekend, most responses (when they weren’t ‘nothing’ or telling me about the food they ate because I always ask about food) involved going to. I’d sit in my head thinking WTF do you mean. Do you own this village? Big and Small Papigos. It was so bea...

2012 Makgeolli Festival (우리술대축제). Posted October 13, 2012 by Aaron. If this year's Makgeolli Fest is even half as good as last year's, it is not to be missed! There were dozens of booths all offering free samples of makgeolli in the hopes that you'll buy. It's like wine tasting, except all in one place and all free. However, the site is mostly Korean (and some of the English bits aren't so great), so I thought I'd translate parts of it and add a bit of explanation based on last year's experience. Here's ...
