Comincio a pensare alle Seven Summits come ad un obiettivo possibile: l’idea di poter essere uno dei primissimi in Italia a completarle (finora l’unico con passaporto italiano è stato nientemeno che Reinhold Messner), pur non essendo un professionista della montagna, mi affascina. Le seven summits » KOSCIUSZKO. Nuovo Galles del Sud. 2228 m - 7.310 ft. Il Monte Kosciuszko è il punto più alto dell’Australia e quindi, secondo una corrente di pensiero abbastanza discutibile, è la settima cima da scalare per portare a termine l’impresa delle “Seven Summits”. Il monte si trova in un grande parco nazionale devastato con regolarità annuale dagli incendi boschivi, al confine fra il Nuovo Galles del Sud e Victoria.

Le seven summits » ACONCAGUA. Catena delle Ande, Argentina. 6959 m - 22.830 ft. E’ il punto più alto del mondo fuori dall’Asia. Si trova a ovest della regione di Mendoza, dove si producono (e si bevono) i migliori vini del Sudamerica, vicino al confine con il Cile. Visto da lontano è una montagna imponente e maestosa, più da vicino assomiglia un gigantesco mucchio di ghiaia in parte coperto, sul versante sud, da ghiacci.

Le seven summits » VINSON. 4897 m - 16.067ft. E’ un altro di quei luoghi della Terra che solo le immagini riescono a descrivere, e neanche pienamente. L’assoluta limpidezza dell’aria dona ai colori, che sono quasi esclusivamente il bianco e l’azzurro, una tonalità quasi irreale, mentre il freddo terribile e il vento che lo amplifica riportano il povero alpinista a una realtà di sofferenza molto più prosaica!
