Severn and Canal Carrying Company. Life afloat on the 1935 ex-Severn and Canal Carrying Co. motor, Willow. June 9, 2015. Apologies for such a dearth of blogs, I’ve been really busy with my new job and we’ve not done much boating! But last weekend the Strawberry Fair came to town and we decided to head out to Waterbeach on Friday night. It was a beautiful evening. And the moorings at Bottisham were delightfully overgrown, making a long grass jungle paradise for the cats! Newer post →. June 18, 2015. On Wi...

Severn and Canal Carrying Company. Life afloat on the 1935 ex-Severn and Canal Carrying Co. motor, Willow. As well as the fitout we have lots of plans for Willow, including switching the 4 cylinder Lister Petter out for something more historic, although NOT the 9hp Petter it was built with. We also want to reinstate the back cabin as it was, eventually. At the moment it is not even lined. More on these to follow. 2 thoughts on “ Future Plans. February 28, 2013. Severn and Canal Carrying Company. Life afloat on the 1935 ex-Severn and Canal Carrying Co. motor, Willow. July 3, 2015. On Wednesday night we went for an evening cruise out to Ely, hoping to get a spot somewhere central for the Aquafest on Sunday, where the Ouse Washes LP has a stand. We set of from Waterbeach as soon as James returned from work, and made our way out of town. It was a beautiful evening to be boating, after a very hot day it was cooler on the river. Newer post →. Halfie: March 2015
http://jhalfie.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Mostly about boating on NB Jubilee. Tuesday, 31 March 2015. Wind, hail and more on batteries. I managed to get some sleep last night despite the banging on the submerged ledge. Had we gone just a couple of hundred yards further yesterday we would have been able to tie up to some piling with some other boats. Oh well. We had to stop when we did as it was getting just a bit too dark. The sun did come out now and then, but I had to keep all my layers on at the helm. But I ran into a little difficulty when I...
Restoration Overview | BCN1645
https://nbbcn1645.wordpress.com/home
The musings and ramblings of a day boat restoration. Just knock up a rudder they said………. BCN 1645 is currently full length, at 71 ft, and the majority of the hull is original. There is however, a section of approx. 20ft in the centre which has been replaced when she was in the hands of British Waterways. We believe, at this time the bottom was replaced with 6mm steel, however we can not be sure. So, at present as we understand it this is the list of hull works required to get back to a workable state:.
Halfie: Burnley Embankment
http://jhalfie.blogspot.com/2015/08/burnley-embankment.html
Mostly about boating on NB Jubilee. Saturday, 8 August 2015. The Burnley Embankment is one of the so-called seven wonders of the waterways. My photo doesn't do it justice; the one I took from below doesn't really show the scale of the thing either. As we entered Burnley we saw plenty of old mills, far more than in Blackburn. We stopped at the canalside museum in the Weavers' Triangle, which was open and very good. I don't remember having seen a bale of cotton before. Labels: Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
Halfie: Two wooden houses: one by the canal, the other in it
http://jhalfie.blogspot.com/2015/08/two-wooden-houses-one-by-canal-other-in.html
Mostly about boating on NB Jubilee. Tuesday, 4 August 2015. Two wooden houses: one by the canal, the other in it. On our journey from Burscough Bridge to Wigan today we passed two interesting "house" constructions. The first was in a field and looks like a reconstruction of the framework of a mediaeval (or earlier? The second was on the approach to Wigan from the west. This looks like a duck house. With Chris and Les on their way to Liverpool; we exchanged hearty greetings. Good to see you again. A lock ...

Mostly about boating on NB Jubilee. Thursday, 30 April 2015. Wheelock to Church Lawton - and missing out on Sandbach. Got a bit carried away today and cracked on with the locks when we should have walked into Sandbach and explored. Last night's mooring at Wheelock would have been ideal. Oh well, next time. Entering Lock 66 on the T&M. As we climbed the locks we could see over to Mow Cop with its distinctive folly. Here it is a bit bigger. To round off the day there was a nice sunset. Can stop their elect...

Captain Ahab's Watery Tales. An on line logbook of watery wanderings. The Other 60 Miles of the BCN. Saturday, 28 March 2015. Going, Going, Gone. Historic Boat Club auction. Going, Going, Gone pretty much sums up our lives at the moment. I took pity on them and suggested that they may like to suss out the local pub and see if there was any chance of seeing the end of the Six Nations Rugby Tournament. Fortunately, I was sat next to the table set aside for payment so I settled within 10 mins and was in the...

The adventures of the Crew living on Narrowboat Matilda Rose. Sunday, 10 February 2013. You may not immediately spot anything unusual about this photo of Bottisham lock but, from where we are moored, it's about 30 minutes into a one hour walk and G is with me! Despite virtually no rain recently, there's still plenty of water hurling down through the sluices. This lovely old wooden boat, 'Jester' is moored at the Cam Conservator's depot, I wonder where her destiny now lies. Where we met and played with th...

Captain Ahab's Watery Tales. An on line logbook of watery wanderings. The Other 60 Miles of the BCN. Friday, 27 February 2015. Severn and Canal Carrying Company. Life afloat on the 1935 ex-Severn and Canal Carrying Co. motor, Willow. In 2008, we bought our first narrowboat. Lucky Duck was 48ft long, and we enjoyed four and a half years living afloat on it, learning about the world of the inland waterways, their history and the boats which were built for them. You can read the archive of our adventures here. Then, we got the historic narrow boat bug and so it was that in February 2013, we bought. A Postcard from Pitcairn Island.
