Photography was part of my job, and I was one of the only people on the team with a camera, so I ended up doing quite a bit of it. I joined the Air Force out of college, after spending my senior year in the ROTC program at Miami University. The Air Force has changed a lot since 2003, and the Public Affairs career field is almost unrecognizable. Once or twice a month I'll get a call from a lieutenant about to deploy to Afghanistan, who wants to know about the country and the war there. I've always been a pretty good writer, but photography was something of a black art for me until just a few years ago. It wasn't until just before my first deployment that I actually bought my first dSLR camera, which I promptly lost somewhere between Offutt and Iraq.

Exercises are a fact of life on any military base. Just about any event can be simulated as part of an exercise, but one type that the Air Force spends a significant amount of time is the hazardous materials spill. These photos are from a hazmat exercise back in September of 2005. It shows our firefighters deploying equipment at a stream outside the base, preparing to skim spilled liquids off the top, mitigating any environmental or health impacts they may have.
