Suicide is scary, there’s no denying it. It’s scary and heartbreaking, painful and difficult. Once illegal and still considered a sin by some, suicide remains a stigmatised cause of death, traumatising survivors and hindering the open discussions we need to have with one another, as individuals and as a society. It’s a big, complex issue, with some statistics worth noting:. 2,273 deaths by suicide occurred in Australia according to the ABS ‘Causes of Death’ 2011 report, equating to approximately 6 per day.
