Sew in the Garden. Time to get picking. Time to get picking. July 14, 2016. February 2, 2017. Sow… The vegetable patch is finally thriving. The runner beans are reaching to the sky and have lots of lovely red and white flowers, I have two varieties growing. The pumpkin and butternut squash now have plenty of room to trail around. The French beans are being picked daily. The sunflowers are standing as tall… Continue reading Time to get picking. It’s all starting to grow. It’s all starting to grow. SowR...

Sew in the Garden. Middot; Tilly and the Buttons. March 5, 2017. March 5, 2017. As soon as Tilly started sharing sneak peaks of the Zadie pattern I loved it but didn’t know if it would suit be as I’m short with gigantic boobs. More photos of the finished dress were released and I decided I definitely wanted to give it a go. I had some decent sized scraps of… Continue reading Sew Zadie. Buttons in the Garden. Companion Planting | Weeds an All

Slugs and Snails, Successes and Fails. That's what my garden is made of. Darwin, Botanical Gardens. Flower and Garden Show 2015. Companion planting is not a new thing but has been going on for a very long time. There is evidence of writings of companion planting but a Marcus Varro in Roman as far back as 116-27 BC. These trends seen to have echo the next 2000 years or so. Clearly even back then they were looking for better yield and better disease and pest control. That’s right you heard right comp...

An adventure into growing veg on an allotment. April 17, 2016. I’ve planted out all the broadbeans that recovered. These took up half the row. I still had some Crimson flowered broadbean seeds from last year so I finished off the double row with these. I’m hoping that I’ll see them in about a fortnight (I’ve never sown broad beans directly in the ground). They were lovely last year, such a pretty colour and they smelled fantastic. April 14, 2016. With all the rain this week I’d thought that the plo...

An adventure into growing veg on an allotment. Tonight’s the night. July 26, 2015. It’s here. The night I’ve been waiting patiently for. The night that I’ve been imagining over and over again in my head for weeks has finally arrived. Tonight, I’m making Raymond Blanc’s pea risotto. The peas at the allotment are finally ready for picking so just before tea time, I headed along to collect as many pods as I could so that I could make the risotto with the freshest peas possible. Needless to say, it was well ...
DIY Chalkboard Paint Herb Pots | Shelley Makes

A craft blog from a closet crafter. DIY Chalkboard Paint Herb Pots. Posted in Craft DIY. A while ago, my boyfriend returned from IKEA with three mini plant pots, which were great, apart from the colour. As a result, they soon became my target for a new DIY craft project. Having helped my mum, who runs a children’s nursery, paint a wall at work with black chalkboard paint, I decided to try a new DIY to transform the pots into customisable herb pots. Chalkboard paint (not to be confused with chalk paint).

It’s sometimes hard to believe that only a few months ago, the vegetables on my plate for tea tonight were just little seedlings starting out in the big wide world. Garlic ready to be lifted. Garlic, fresh from the ground. The purple tinged bulbs of the Lautrec Wight garlic. Strawberries, potatoes and broad beans. Uchiki Kuri winter squash. Tonight’s the night. Interes...
