four square walls: sewing a collar: a different order
http://foursquarewalls.blogspot.com/2013/09/sewing-collar-different-order.html
Sunday, September 15, 2013. Sewing a collar: a different order. So I've kind of become obsessed with mastering the techniques of sewing a button-up collared shirt (or shirt dress! I've discovered a technique in attaching the collar/stand that works considerably better for me than the other methods I've tried. It's not necessarily a technique - it's more just a change in the order of construction. I don't think this is new or revolutionary - in fact, Peter of Male Pattern Boldness. This has always resulte...
four square walls: narrow hem: three ways
http://foursquarewalls.blogspot.com/2014/05/narrow-hem-three-ways.html
Thursday, May 1, 2014. Narrow hem: three ways. I sew a lot of narrow hems these days, and I've tried so many different methods to make them. The majority of tutorials for narrow or rolled hems (that I've seen) include a ton of measuring, trimming, or exhaustive pressing. Boo, ain't got time for that. What if you could make the narrowest of hems doing a minimal amount of all that stuff, and without. A rolled hem foot? Yea, I said it. METHOD ONE: WITH A SERGER. You will have a single line of stitching on t...

four square walls: one beignet - hold the buttons - and a side of alma
http://foursquarewalls.blogspot.com/2013/01/one-beignet-hold-buttons-and-side-of.html
Sunday, January 27, 2013. One beignet - hold the buttons - and a side of alma. Anyone who knows me IRL probably knows my navy corduroy Beignet skirt. I made the skirt shell in beige wool (gifted from my fabric angel. That's not my actual bum, don't worry. But this reminds me: I do have someone to introduce you to. Awwww, ain't she cute. My brother and his girlfriend surprised me with this dressform for Christmas. This little lady has already been featured on my Instagram. Anyway, as I was making this ski...

four square walls: portside duffel bag
http://foursquarewalls.blogspot.com/2014/04/portside-duffel-bag.html
Thursday, April 10, 2014. Duffle bag or duffel bag? I think they're interchangeable but I've always used the -el version. Neither spelling is recognized by this spell check anyway. No, Blogger, I don't mean "ruffle" and I certainly don't mean "luffed." WHAT IS LUFFED? It's probably not normal for a person to love a duffel bag as much as I love this one. I don't love. Much of what I make, I admit. Sure, there are handmade garments that I like because they're comfortable or flattering. But LOVE? To give a ...

four square walls: fear fabric: a lacy affair
http://foursquarewalls.blogspot.com/2013/10/fear-fabric-lacy-affair.html
Thursday, October 31, 2013. Fear fabric: a lacy affair. Okay, we've moved into a different category of fear. As in, the fear of challenging your skill set, venturing into the unknown, and potentially failing at a sewing project due to lack of experience. THAT is actually what this blog post is about. Sorry we have to move away from the clown ghosts. In the spirit of the spooky holiday, Beth of 110 Creations. How do you finish the edges? How to you hem it? How do you wash and care for it? In ivory, also f...

four square walls: sewing for money
http://foursquarewalls.blogspot.com/2014/05/sewing-for-money.html
Thursday, May 29, 2014. Ewing for Money. Do you do it? Would you do it full-time? No Georgies were harmed during the taking of this photo. We've probably all mused over this topic at some point. When you practice a skilled trade, especially one like sewing that is so practical yet so rare, after awhile you start to wonder if you could earn some cash from it. Or even make it your career and your livelihood. If you love your hobby, why not pursue it wholeheartedly? If I spend each workday thinking about ho...

Thursday, 30 April 2015. Look I finished a thing! At the start of the year I decided to do a sketch a day for a year. It didn't last very long as I quickly accepted that. Some days I don't have the time or the inclination to do it, BUT I did end up with a nice little pile of 'to-be-stitched' sketches and this is based on one of those. I had to sneak a whale in there too hiding in the water. I sort of love the back of it too- I always have messy backs and they remind me of sketchy drawings. The colours ar...

Discover the fun, funky, yet oddly practical side of gift giving. Monday, February 2, 2009. Expanding the Plarn Horizon. In manipulating the plarn to make the basket. I have tried crocheting with both sizes of plarn. The thicker plarn produced a stable structure, much like the cute raffia purses that we see for children around Spring time. The thinner plarn is interesting. I am still experimenting and will be writing a guest blog spot for my friend Glue and Glitter. Links to this post. Links to this post.
Adventures in Sewing
This is the blog of a girl who one day decided to learn to sew. Saturday, July 18, 2015. The Making of 18th Century Pocket Hoops. Alright ladies and gents. Grab a snack and be prepared to read about the making of my 18th century pocket hoops. I used Simplicity 4092. First, I cut out the pattern pieces and then marked them. Then I sewed twill tape the width of the pocket hoops and inserted boning, which I also cut the same width, minus 1-1/4″. There’s three boning channels per pannier. I made a tote.
The SewPhisticate: Beyond the Little Black Dress
The SewPhisticate: Beyond the Little Black Dress. Upgrade to paid account! Thursday, November 27th, 2014. Will wonders never cease? Sometimes I sew things. Sometimes I don't hate them. Sometimes I might even post a photo, provided that it doesn't make me look too fat. If all goes well, there will be photo evidence this weekend. In the meantime, blessings to you all on Thanksgiving! I am now in some PT for this, which will hopefully make it less of a trial to get back to the machine! Friday, May 24th, 2013.
