About me – PICTURE OF SINGAPORE ODONATA

https://sgodonata.wordpress.com/about-me

PICTURE OF SINGAPORE ODONATA. Serenity at Upper Peirce Reservoir. Thanks for visiting my website. I am Leonard Tan, from Singapore. I started observing dragonflies and damselflies from the beginning of year 2010, a hobby which I greatly enjoy. I love taking photograph of these fascinating insects in their natural habitats. I hope you enjoy reading my website and hope to receive your comments. 2 thoughts on “ About me. January 3, 2016 at 12:25 pm. You have records of some rare species in Singapore. Great ...

I have seen this species at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Chestnut Avenue Forests, Mandai Forests. This is possibly the largest dragonfly in the Libellulidae family. I used to see this speci...

A Wandering Naturalist: Florida: Pondhawk

http://ronorenstein.blogspot.com/2015/08/florida-pondhawk.html

Monday, August 3, 2015. One of the more optimistic things a naturalist can do in South Florida is to discover areas that, counter to the usual tendency for urban and suburban sprawl, are being converted from manicured lawns and sterile pools back into natural areas. I first came across the Pondhawk Natural Area. Pondhawk centers around a restored marshy area and a scrub zone dotted with pine, underlain with a dense growth of Saw Palmetto ( Serenoa repens. Trees in the state. Poking around the edge. T...

A Wandering Naturalist: July 2015

Thursday, July 30, 2015. Australia: Farewell to the West (Part 2). The afternoon of September 22, 2013, was our last in Western Australia, and it was time for Eileen and I to think about heading, more or less, in the direction of Perth Airport. That meant, after a final look at the Indian Ocean at Lancelin, heading east again across the sandy coastal heathlands before turning south. It also meant another pass through some very nice wildflower country. Mayweed Sunray ( Hyalosperma cotula. Pimpernel comes ...

A Wandering Naturalist: Florida: Wetland Birds and Dragonflies

http://ronorenstein.blogspot.com/2015/08/florida-wetland-birds-and-dragonflies.html

Saturday, August 1, 2015. Florida: Wetland Birds and Dragonflies. An Anhinga ( Anhinga anhinga. Still soaking wet, preens and basks in the sun. A Glossy Ibis ( Plegadis falcinellus. Picks its way through the marshland vegetation. A pair of Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks ( Dendrocygna autumnalis. Scratch and preen while an unconcerned male Blue-winged Teal ( Anas discors. Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks are among the most handsome of waterfowl. Wintering Northern Shovelers ( Anas clypeata. Are charming creat...

A Wandering Naturalist: June 2014

http://ronorenstein.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Saturday, June 28, 2014. The second day of our weekend at Edwin Wiek's WFFT rescue centre (March 10, 2013) was devoted to the fabled Kaeng Krachan National Park. The largest in the country, only a short drive away. A one-day visit cannot do more than scratch the surface of this huge place, but even so it gave me enough for three posts. The next two will be devoted to a sampling of Kaeng Krachan's fabulous butterfly fauna (around 300 species! A species now extinct. Edwin had advertised our outing as a bir...

A Wandering Naturalist: May 2014

http://ronorenstein.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Scarcely deserves the adjective "usual". We did come across a few birds that were not so usual - at least, not for me. American Bitterns ( Botaurus lentiginosus. Are not rare birds, but they are not always easy to come by in South Florida. Getting a good look at one in the open is always an event to celebrate. Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks ( Dendrocygna autumnalis. Presumably wanderers from the Bahamas. Telling the two apart isn't always easy, especially considering that the ...

A Wandering Naturalist: Florida: Exotic Swamphens and Wandering Cormorants

http://ronorenstein.blogspot.com/2015/08/florida-exotic-swamphens-and-wandering.html

Sunday, August 2, 2015. Florida: Exotic Swamphens and Wandering Cormorants. When I was a child, I would have had to travel to the Old World to see a Purple Swamphen ( Porphyrio porphyrio. Or, if you follow the recent tendency to split that species up, I would have had to go to Asia to see a Grey-headed Swamphen ( P. poliocephalus. Like their smaller native cousin the American Purple Gallinule ( Porphyrula martinica. Though iguanas, like the Purple Swamphen, are vegetarians. Green Iguanas are native to Me...

A Wandering Naturalist: November 2014

http://ronorenstein.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Friday, November 21, 2014. Taiwan: In Da’an Park. After taking you up and down the central Taiwanese mountains and back and forth through the greener parts of Taipei, I thought I would end my account of our April 2013 trip to Taiwan with a stroll - my last bird walk before heading home - just across the street from our hotel. Da'an Park is a first-rate urban birding site, where the small trees and manicured lawns make bird-spotting easy. Another widespread Asian species. Besides scattered trees and bits ...

A Wandering Naturalist: December 2014

http://ronorenstein.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 9, 2014. Sarawak: Invasion of the Parrotfinches (Part Two). The Pin-tailed Parrotfinches ( Erythrura prasina. Once again, I was only able to get some distant photographs, and none of the birds perched and feeding on the rice (which always seem to happen just out of sight). These aren't great photos by any means, but at least they show the birds' colours. Unfortunately, the birds never came near him. But I'm not at all sure that that is what it is. Though, were easier to photograph.

A Wandering Naturalist: March 2015

http://ronorenstein.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 30, 2015. Australia: Two Peoples Bay. It may be hard to explain why I wanted to go to Two Peoples Bay. For a birder, of course, it's almost the only spot for two of Australia's rarest birds, the Western Bristlebird ( Dasyornis longirostris. And the famous Noisy Scrub-Bird ( Atrichornis clamosus. That continues to this day. This was a place I had to see - and it doesn't hurt that it is a very beautiful spot. It's also a very popular. Though Two Peoples Bay is famous for its (skulking and ver...

A Wandering Naturalist: May 2015

Saturday, May 30, 2015. Australia: A Coral Reef on Land (Part 3). This entry presents still more flowers from our trip around the Lesueur National Park Scenic Drive on September 13, 2015. If this seems like a lot of blog space for one short drive, I can assure you that a really detailed account of the floral diversity. At Lesueur would take far longer. Everywhere we looked, the Kwongan - the sandplain heath vegetation that covers most of the park - was heavily in bloom. A member of the daylily family (He...
