The Silence Speaks Loudly. In addition to the language program there was a cultural program led by two women in their 80s, both survivors. They took us through the former ghetto and to the killing fields and told us their stories. I was moved by their stories, but also disturbed. I knew when they were no longer there, their stories would be lost. I had already seen the rewriting of history. Acrylic on Canvas 72'x24'. The Jewish Identity and Legacy Project. The Jewish Identity and Legacy Project is an oral history, arts and storytelling project with a focus upon Jewish elders and their legacy. The project took place at Sholom Home, an elder facility in the Twin Cities. The project began with a series of oral histories around which I developed artwork and video. My prior work has often been based on memories. So much of identity is bound up in memory that I began to wonder what happens to one's identity when one loses memory. When I was faced with parents with declining memories, this suddenly became a topic of considerable interest to me. In this series I examine identity, how one maintains a sense of purpose, the continuing ability to create, the experience itself and the ways in which we can support our loved ones.
