This year the Scouts have been working towards a 50 mile hike in the Goat Rocks wilderness. To prepare them, I've laid-out a 6 month program of backpacking trips with increasing difficulty. This weekend was our first steep backpacking day hike. Blanca Lake is about 4,000 total vertical feet, since you descend (and must regain) 700 feet tot eh lake from the high point. I don't really recommend the park, but the weather was fantastic, the kids had a blast and it was a nice, easy way to warm them up to camping (not that they'd need much warming up). Lake was frozen and we traveled over it with no concerns. Overcast with snow showers Friday, but cleared Friday night and the stars were amazing. Saturday was clear and beautiful.
