Letters Made with Gold: I. My luve is like a red, red rose. Letters Made with Gold is about being in love, and knowing that you, and your beloved, will die. The cycle traces a progression from youthful passion and optimism, through denial and anger, to acceptance. The three texts come from the repertoires of Appalachian sacred and secular song that I have been exploring over the past five years. Released January 1, 2014. Frequently served as the setting for my moments of moral epiphany with my mom. More will follow. But for now, I offer this first one. As a Mother’s Day card to my mom. As a fourth grader, my world was limited to the neighborhood where I lived, the school where I learned, the baseball diamonds where I played, and the handful of places I could reach on foot or by bike.

I knew all the songs, and all the words. At 13 years old, I was DJing at parties with one of my best friends – always knowing what songs to play, when to slow it down, and speed it up. My reply was always the same, because I support the artist, and all the hard work that goes into making a song .
