The hint of warmth in the air put me in spring/summer mode, when I like nothing more than noshing on seafood and Mexican food. There’s just something about warm weather that screams margaritas and guacamole and fish tacos. So last night, I got my fix a little early in the season with shrimp tacos. I mixed up a quick marinade of olive oil, lime juice, salt, cayenne pepper, cumin, cilantro, and two cloves of garlic. I made salsa and guacamole. Adding this one to the rotation of go-to weeknight dinners.

After sitting in a sports bar for four days straight (and watching my bracket go down the toilet), my friends and I worked our way through a nice series of bar food: fried pickles, nachos, waffle fries, chicken strips, fried green beans, chips and salsa… The one thing we skipped? And oh man do I love wings. So last night, Aaron and I decided to make our own. I just spent $48 on seeds. Yeah Let that sink in for a minute. I know what you’re thinking: She’s gone mad. Cooking is obviously a huge passion of mine. And part of cooking is understanding food and where it comes from. So growing my own vegetables and herbs seems entirely logical if I want to really learn more about what goes on my plate. I don’t have a green thumb. I kill houseplants. I don’t particularly like dirt or bugs. That’s all about to change. I’m going to make gardening my bitch.

The importance of buying local and eating well. Mr 8 and I hosted his parents for dinner on Saturday night and, in the bustle of trying to get everything on the table and be a warm and friendly host, I totally failed to take pictures of the food. I’m kicking myself because IT WAS SOOOO GOOD. We decided to go with fajitas because they are a) easy, b) versatile and c) good for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. No Was it more than you’d pay at good restaurant? No In fact, $20 fed three people with leftovers.

The Valentine’s Day spread:. Dungeness crab from the local fish market. I had never cleaned and cracked a crab before, but it was surprisingly easy (if not a little disgusting). Despite instructions to steam or bake the [already cooked] crab, I followed my parents advice and served it cold, which is how I’ve always eaten it. It was delicious. Shrimp sauteed in butter, garlic and white wine. Salad with butter lettuce, pears, goat cheese, pecans and raspberry vinaigrette. Crusty bread, warm from the oven.
