バーニーズマウンテンドッグは、1937年にAKC アメリカケネルクラブ に認められ、 1987年にJKC ジャパンケネルクラブ に認められた大型犬です。 スイスには、エントレブッハー マウンテン ドッグ、 グレーター スイス マウンテン ドッグ、 そしてアッペンツェラー マウンテン ドッグという 4種類のマウンテンドッグが存在しますが、 バーニーズマウンテンドッグはそのうちの1つです。 バーニーズマウンテンドッグの別名であるベルンナー ゼネフンドとは、 ベルンの山犬 という意味です。 バーニーズマウンテンドッグは、もとはスイスの山間部で牛や羊を追いたて、 移動させるという 牧畜犬 として活躍していました。 バーニーズマウンテンドッグの祖先は、 ローマ帝国がスイスを侵略するときにつれてきた軍用犬 マスティフ と、 スイス原産の牧畜犬だと言われています。 そのため、雑種化していた数少ない犬たちから、 バーニーズマウンテンドッグの特性として残っていた 純粋な部分を受け継がせることで、 かつて存在していたバーニーズマウンテンドッグを復元させることに成功したのです。
