Riparian areas, along Chadron Creek, contain cottonwood, green ash, hackberry, chokecherry, wild plum, buffaloberry and several introduced grass species. Ponderosa pine thinned to enhance the growth of this stand of mountain mahogany, which is excellent browse for deer and elk. The climate of Dawes County is semiarid, the average annual precipitation in Chadron is 15 inches. Relative humidity is low so the air feels warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Jim's grand parents, Frank and Jerene O'Rourke, purchased the RuJoDen in 1950 from the family that originally homesteaded the place in the 1880's. Frank and Jerene were born in dugouts near Gordon, Nebraska and as a young man Frank worked as a cowboy on the huge Spade Ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills.
