Any person over the age of 19 years residing in Alabama, regardless of advanced years or relationship to the adoptee can adopt. Both children and adults can be adopted under Alabama law. Both single people and married couples may adopt in Alabama. Adoptions are done in the Probate Court of the county in which the child resides, the petitioners reside or where the placing agency does business. How long does the adoption process take? Can an adoption only be done if the biological parents consent?

How long does the adoption process take? The length of the adoption process depends upon the complications involved in each particular adoption and the Probate Court's calendar. A simple adoption in which the biological parents have consented usually takes about 60 days. Can an adoption only be done if the biological parents consent? No, under Alabama law a consent to the adoption can be implied if the biological parent or parents have had no significant contact with the adoptee for more than 6 months.

Jill received a Juris Doctor degree magna cum laude from the Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama in 1992. Jill was the Managing Editor of the Cumberland Law Review. Jill has a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Vermont. Jill is married to local Fox 6 Sports Director Rick Karle. They have two children.
