St James’ Church. St James’ Church. A church dedicated to St James was established around 1070. Over the last millennium it has evolved to meet the needs of the surrounding community of Sheldwich where people have lived since Roman times. The church is part of Shepherds Lees Benefice, a cluster which includes the villages of Selling, Leaveland and Badlesmere. St James contributes in many and varied ways to Sheldwich’s community of about 200 dwellings. Weekly services are held at 10.00 am.

St James’ Church. Sheldwich Cricket Club is thought to have been established over 100 years ago with cricket played on the village lees since 1922. The club plays in the Kent Regional Cricket League on Saturdays and the Kent Village Cricket League on Sundays. The president of the Club is The Countess Sondes and its chairman is Nick Collins.

St James’ Church. On November 5th, Bonfire Night is held on the Lees. Items for the bonfire are ‘contributed’ by local households and participants are invited to being fireworks to share in a display. A contest is held for the best Guy for the bonfire. Saturday, 5th November 2016. Last year, Guy Fawkes’ Night was rather wet and windy. Undeterred and in true British spirit, the bonfire was lit, the Guys were judged and rockets soared (albeit in an arc!

St James’ Church. The fête has a wide variety of displays and exhibits for visitors to enjoy:. The horticulturalists in the community display the fruits and vegetables of their labour. The school children show their artwork and engage in Maypole dancing. Working steam engines attract great interest, as do MG cars brought by enthusiasts. Pets of all shapes and sizes compete for the best in show. Birds of prey provide a fascinating display, as do a series of “Creepy Claws”.
