4 out of 5 beavers recommend this blog. Train ride to China. He was a great character, really talkative and we had some good conversations. During the daylight hours, we passed through much of the scenery familiar to us from our Mongolian expedition, including a few vistas of Bactrian camels in the desert. It was a perfect way to leave a country that has so far been the highlight of our trip. He said, ‘welcome in China! Last day in Mongolia – we nearly empty our bank accounts; my hair is Destroyed. I have to say I was very impressed with Luke’s biking skills, but loathe to try it myself I just don’t trust myself, particularly on winding, hilly roads! There are only 65 left and they are only found on Cat Ba. Apparently they can drink sea water, so their kidneys must be rather impressive! We returned to the mai...

4 out of 5 beavers recommend this blog. Last day in Hanoi →. The sleeper train was our best yet! Our compartment had all the old school charm of French colonial era furnishings, with wooden panels, comfy beds, lamps and to cap it all, a table with a lace cloth and a little vase of fake flowers. We slept really well, possibly because the train travelled at such a sedate pace, taking 8 hours to travel 180 miles! Bruce and Ash were both extremely tall, and whilst I had been starting to feel like a taller th...

4 out of 5 beavers recommend this blog. Chengdu – hot pot and pandas! Our beds were at one end of the staff carriage, and they worked shifts so we spent the afternoon and early evening in the dark and just as we were going to bed, the lights were turned on! The train pulled into Chengdu in the morning, and we realised neither of us had written down the details for our hostel. We wandered around the station forecourt in search of Wi-Fi and finally got a connection (and breakfast! Sheri was from Texas and ...

Following the upheaval of the student protests, he requested to be sent to a remote part of the country to continue his studies. He was sent to Shanbei, a region in the north of Shaanxi province, where he stayed in a traditional ‘cave dwelling’ village called Ni he gou (which means ‘muddy river ditch! We approached the little congregation of people waiting for us at the station and greeted them with ‘ni hao!

4 out of 5 beavers recommend this blog. Hue – hotting up for Tet; of tombs, temples and ruins; we are reminded once more what a small world it is…. The coach finally pulled out of the station, and our 17 hour journey commenced! Luckily, by the time the bus stopped for breakfast at 9am the next morning, enough people had got off for us to move into bunks, although Luke inexplicably decided he preferred to stay in his uncomfortable nest in the corridor – possibly as some sort of self-punishment? The journe...

4 out of 5 beavers recommend this blog. We have just found out that the lovely lady we stayed with in Moscow was so distraught after our surprise 1am eviction from her apartment, that she went to the British Embassy to tell them about it. The embassy lodged a complaint with the police and the result of this was that the policeman who evicted us that night was fired, as what he did was illegal! He had anticipated our error and followed us, bringing a friend along with him! The rice terraces of Yuanyang.

4 out of 5 beavers recommend this blog. Our final days on Jeju. We slept very well after our long hike. Eric arrived in the morning to collect us and we went to pick up some more noodles for the pigs and cut some more grass for them. They loved it! We decided we would all like to see some lava tubes, so we piled into the front of the van (a tight squeeze! Of course, the boy saves the day and is imbued with a new love of Jeju to boot. Well into the 20. We spent the morning finishing off sorting and moving...

4 out of 5 beavers recommend this blog. The rice terraces of Yuanyang. He had anticipated our error and followed us, bringing a friend along with him! Grinning, he asked if we wanted a lift now, and sheepishly we all agreed. I exchanged the remainder of our Chinese yuan with a dodgy dealer by the border checkpoint. I definitely need to brush up on my haggling skills and not agree straight away out of embarrassment as I got a worse exchange rate than anyone else! 2 thoughts on “ Walking to Vietnam. Blog a...
