Sherwin in the Community. The History of Sherwin Alumina Plant. Initially, the two plants were served by rail (Southern Pacific) and a single pier used to import Bauxite from the Reynolds Mines in Jamaica. The Sherwin Plant’s only customer was the San Patricio Plant. In 1957, opportunities were found to sell alumina in new markets and a second Bauxite warehouse building and a second pier was added to export product. Process improvements allowed some increase in capacity. Portland Chamber of Commerce.
