Travel with Al: March 2009

Tuesday, March 24, 2009. But this is a funny thing. Why do we sit back and wait for the these powerful few to take pity on us, wait for them to realise their mistakes. Why don't we stand-up and fight against them; buck their system; demand change; demand a better life for ourselves and our children? Oh, that's right, they are too powerful; they call the shots. It seems to me that power is not gained, it is given. But here's the clincher - you MUST speak out, you MUST act. Only once we all realise this...

Wednesday, April 28, 2010. I'm not sure exactly how it happend, but somehow since I've been back in China I've managed to get lost within myself. I'm not sure what caused me to get lost, although to be fair I've never been famous for my sense of direction or overall spatial awareness. But there I found myself, lost, not sure how I got there and definately no idea how to get out. It reminds me of the time I got lost walking home from the train station in Richmond! Can I explain philosophy? Freedom. wo...

Tuesday, February 24, 2009. Random pictures of Cambodia! Tree growing on the temple. Skye doing what she loves. getting her photo taken by me! Three shrewd businessmen, and the best tour guides you could ask for, standing in front of a 'locals only' temple, that they happily took us to. Haven't seen one of these in months! The temples are full of cool doorways, leading to millions of little nooks and crannies. Sunset over the disappearing lake in Phnom. One of approx 10 zillion carved dancing deities.

Dash Does Kathmandu: June 2009
http://dashdoeskathmandu.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
At the Last Minute. So just as I was starting to think (ok worry) that the guys at work were gonna let me go with completely no fanfare at all, Mohan busted in on me and Khem during a meeting this morning and told him to make sure he was free at 6pm tonight for a party for Rob. I said, "what's happening at 6? Mohan took a step back, and goes, "you understood me? Yeah, my Nepali's not that bad. Come on, I've been here for a year. What's going on? We are organising a program for you tonight.". I had the mo...

Dash Does Kathmandu: February 2009

I ask why a lot. You know this. It’s a bad question in Nepal. Cos no one knows the answer. Load shedding fun fact #2: They don't seem to need a schedule anymore, they just give it to you when it suits them, which was not for 36 hours the other day. Thursday, February 26, 2009. Load shedding fun fact. Last night in my self-induced silence I started go back through my diary entries. To look at my first few days in Nepal, to look at my days on the way to the Annapurna Sanctuary. Back in the times wh...19 Ju...

Thursday, August 13, 2009. Top Ten (in no particular order):. 1) Playing 5-a-side football with and against guys from all over the world. I made some good mates! 2) Getting kicked in the head during an all in brawl whilst playing football! Who would have thought there was some truth to the stereotype about Chinese people and Kung. 3) Travelling throughout the Tibetan lands in Yunnan, Sichuan. 4) Hanging out with Renko. And his family in the grasslands of Langmusi. Watermelon) and save it for me! A human ...

Saturday, January 23, 2010. Naurally of course, if your students like and respect you thats great, but its not the purpose of the relationship, the purpose is learning. So if they learn and they hate you, so be it. Well, as I found out yesterday, its easier said than done. As I listened to her pleas for clemency, and hollow promises of change, my almost overpowering emotional reaction was to give in and let her off with it, rather than have her and her mates hate me. weird! Sunday, January 3, 2010. Of co...

8216;A few of my favourite things’ Part 3: I’m gonna knock on your door. I’ll admit it – I have a souvenir problem. I love the process of travelling and collecting bits and pieces that remind me of places and people, smells and sights. Mostly, these collections act as warm memories and find a special place in my home as though they had always been there. Enter the lion door knocker. The last time I called the UK home for any length of time was way back in 1999 when I worked as a classroom assistant and m...
