1866-1883 Shield Nickel Coin Guide. Were struck each year between 1866 and 1883, including two years when the coins were not struck for circulation. Although proof coin mintages were significantly lower than circulating coin mintages, in most instances the proofs are more readily available since a great proportion of the coins were saved by collectors. The rarest proof coin is the 1867 Proof Shield Nickel with Rays. Two other issues of focus are the 1877 and 1878 Shield Nickel.

1866-1883 Shield Nickel Coin Guide. The 1880 Shield Nickel. Has the lowest mintage of the series for a circulation strike. There were only 16,000 pieces produced, making it the clear key date of the series. The highest graded examples of the circulation strike are a few examples graded MS66. An 1880 Shield Nickel graded NGC MS 65 sold for $40,250 at an auction held in June 2010. Other low mintage years include the 1879 with 25,900 produced and the 1881 with 68,800 produced. 1877-1878 Proof Shield Nickels.

Were only produced in proof format, since circulation strikes were not needed for these years. For the first time since specie payments were suspended by the government in 1861, silver coins were circulating again. As a result, long retained coins reentered circulation and new coins were not needed. Mintages for new coins were virtually non-existent during those years.

Problems had developed in striking the coins with proper detail due to the hard nickel composition. It was believed that the rays which appeared between the thirteen stars on the reverse of the coin contributed to the problem by taking metal flow that would have struck up details on the obverse of the coin.
