“Why Don’t You Get on with Your Life?” – shiftingmargins
https://shiftingmargins.wordpress.com/2016/10/06/why-dont-you-get-on-with-your-life
The blog of Kenneth L. Carder. 8220;Why Don’t You Get on with Your Life? October 6, 2016. Why don’t you get on with your life? That was the question raised to a friend whose wife is in a memory care facility. For six years, he has visited her daily between 1:00 and 3:00 pm Since the disease has taken her language, he mostly sits silently beside her, gently holding her hand. She responds with an occasional smile or a momentary twinkle in her eyes. The advice may be well intended. Neurocognitive diseas...

The blog of Kenneth L. Carder. I had settled in for the evening after a long day. The phone rang as I was about to drift off to sleep. Is this Reverend Carder, the preacher who is quoted in the newspaper as being against the death penalty? The irate woman asked. I had gone on public record in opposition to executions in the Tennessee. Our verbal clash went back and forth with ever-escalating emotional intensity. Then, she blurted out something that abruptly ended the arguing! I had totally missed her!

The blog of Kenneth L. Carder. Is Love a Practical Way Forward? My blog, Schism Is a Failure of Love and Leadership, sparked considerable discussion. Many thoughtful questions and challenges merit continued reflection on my part and additional discussion across the church. ( https:/ shiftingmargins.wordpress.com/2016/10/12/schism-is-a-failure-of-love-and-leadership/. It is appropriate to revisit Jesus’s farewell discourse in John’s Gospel. Two statements of Jesus have largely been ignored: This is my...

The blog of Kenneth L. Carder. Schism Is a Failure of Love and Leadership. October 12, 2016. Talk of schism in The United Methodist Church abounds, exposing an already distracted church. Contemplating split precisely when the world needs an embodied message of reconciliation is a transparent betrayal of the church’s nature and mission. John Wesley in his sermon On Schism declares:. A historian of American religion, C. C. Goen, provides a relevant case study. His book. Though he does not contend that the ...

A Church For A Time Such As This. July 18, 2016. July 19, 2016. As the time came for our prayer on Sunday morning, we couldn’t help but pray the news – for the victims of gun violence across the nation, for those trapped in the cycle of racism, and for those whose call to protect and serve left them exposed, threatened and afraid. It is awful to watch and even more gut wrenching to live. America is on fire – full of rage and stocked up on anger, plenty of it righteous. We’re long on s...They know that th...
About Daniel | Daniel Ogle
https://danielogle.wordpress.com/about
For as long as I can remember I’ve had two obsessions, well besides playing first base for the Chicago Cubs. I’ve always loved words reading them, speaking them (way too much for my own good) and eventually writing them. My mom was convinced at a fairly early age that I would be a writer. I told her she was nuts. It turns out she wasn’t. I spent a few years writing about one kind of religion. College football and even had my name show up on ESPN.com you can read that here. I write about good books. Despi...

Modern Compassion: Or What I’m Learning from Reading Emma Straub. August 8, 2016. August 8, 2016. It’s hard to find a list of summer beach reads without Modern Lovers. The new book from Emma Straub, on it. Her books find their way on these lists because they aren’t dense, feature family drama combined with romance, and you can read them over the course of a vacation or even a weekend if you can avoid the television and other distractions. 8211; is a story that has something to teach us. Six For Your Long Weekend. September 2, 2016. Six For Your Weekend – Plus Some News on Moving Day. September 8, 2016. If certain religious services were less about preening about one’s own virtue or pointing fingers at somebody else’s iniquity and more about tackling human needs around us, this would be a better world and surely Jesus would applaud as well. -Nicholas Kristof. A Church Nerd’s Summer Reading List. June 15, 2016. June 18, 2016. We just set the dates for our summer vacation with the family – which means at least two things – packing noise-cancelling headphones and bringing lots of books. The summer means different things for different people, but in our house it means a little bit of a break to finally find the time to read those books that have been on our Amazon Wish List or have been collecting dust around the house. The Class Meeting, Kevin Watson. I came out...

Forgetting Fair and Living With Grace: A Sermon on Labor, Salary and a Generous Owner. September 5, 2016. I thought about beginning this morning with a story about a game. It was a game with two teams. One that came to play at the beginning, played hard, worked hard, and did everything they could, played almost as well as they could possibly play. And my dad, in his wisdom and sympathy, usually had a quick rejoinder – well guess what, life isn’t fair! And we know that’s true, don’t we? So, it shouldn’t s...

More Than Work: Losing The Idol of Busy and Finding Grace in Rest. August 30, 2016. Fridays are the most difficult days of my week. Fridays are also my day off. Sundays aren’t really days of rest for preachers – as friends in church are so kind to remind me, this is the only day I work all week. And Saturdays, well between the Gunners, the Vols and the honey-do list that awaits, there’s not a lot of Spirit-infused rest happening then either. I’ve read the books – Heschel. I’m reminded of that visit that ...

The blog of Kenneth L. Carder. Christmas: A Stark Contrast to Prevailing Values. Believing and living the Christmas stories is dangerous, especially today! But that is precisely what we are called to do. I have an uneasy feeling that the coming months will test the seriousness with which Christians in America take Christmas. What does it say to us that God chose to come among us as a vulnerable brown baby, born of an unmarried peasant teenager in a smelly barn in a remote village in the Middle East?
