Life as we know it

Life as we know it. Saturday, February 27, 2010. One final post at the end of an era. So within a week, we visited with Ed's parents and all 8 of his siblings and my 3 sibs. It was fun but we are glad to be home. Following are pictures of our trip home through the Eastern and Midwestern USA. We don't see cardinals in Briton so it was nice to view that outside of Ed's parents house. Ed is waiting for the train to NYC. At the entrance to Central Park in Manhattan. A view of Manhattan from Central park.

Life as we know it. Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Sean and Judith Gardiner, good friends who also go to Wood Green Mennonite Church, took Ed and I out for some great Indian food. When you are in London, the place to go with the most choices and best curry's is Brick Lane. We took a walk afterwards to walk off some calories and close by is this bell foundry. The Liberty Bell was made here. It is still a working foundry. Another picture of the foundry. Ed and Phyllis Shirk. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Life as we know it: July 2009

http://www.shirks.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Life as we know it. Monday, July 27, 2009. A walk in East London. Finally a day off to take a walk in London. We got out our deck of London walk cards and chose two walks close together in East London. The first 'landmark' was the Wesley Chapel and Museum. The museum wasn't open today as it is Sunday. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, began his movement here in 1738. We went to a park called Finsbury Circus. This is one of the buildings surrounding the park circle. Another view of the park. We are h...

Life as we know it. Friday, February 19, 2010. On our last week in London, we took the 43 bus down to London Bridge and walked the South Bank in the evening. This is St Paul's. Here is the London Eye. For our farewell staff party, we walked from Highgate to Hampstead via the Heath to a French crepery. Ed and Phyllis Shirk. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sometimes things that are already broken are beautiful if you fit them together with other broken pieces. Two days in Barcelona have taught me to love Gaudi. John Howard Yoder makes the distinction between a pacifism that simply advances the claim that it can achieve what war promises to achieve, but do it just as well or even better without violence, and that (to him authentic) kind of faithfulness that is willing to accept evident defeat rather than complicity with evil. Saturday, September 30, 2006. Now the above is just me paraphrasing from one person, so please, go ask someone Muslim how they understand the love of God, because I can't actually speak for that. But I'm just mentioning what he said because it touched me surprisingly to be reminded of God's prodigal love for me and the whole world. And he asked, "how much can you carry? Wednesday, August 23, 2006. I've put off writing anything since I got back because it was so intense, I don't know where to start. I spent 10 days in the middle of nowhere with 13 other people, and we started by thinking our way through a theological basis for a peace and justice stance and then spent the rest of time meandering through many different people's real-life expressions of such a faith. The picture: How many peace activists does it take to read a map? Posted by dm at 12:04 PM. The Sufi poetry...

Sunday, January 28, 2007. Anthem - leonard cohen. The birds they sang. At the break of day. I heard them say. Don't dwell on what. Or what is yet to be. Ah the wars they will. She will be caught again. The dove is never free. Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in. We asked for signs. The signs were sent:. Of every government -. Signs for all to see. I can't run no more. With that lawless crowd. There is no drum.

Sunday, December 31, 2006. For the New Year. This is a day of new beginnings,. Time to remember and move on,. Time to believe what love is bringing,. Laying to rest the pain that's gone. For by the life and death of Jesus,. Love's mighty Spirit, now as then,. Can make for us a world of difference,. As faith and hope are born again. Then let us, with the Spirit's daring,. Step from the past and leave behind. Our disappointment, guilt, and grieving,. Seeking new paths, and sure to find. Brian Wren, 1978.
