A Meta-Cognitive Journal About Writing… Plus Other Stuff. No Better Time Than Now (re-post). Given what unfolded in Baton Rouge and Minneapolis last week, a poem I wrote last summer has been running through my mind. I posted it here. Originally, though in a very rough form. A call for publication last spring encouraged me to get it back out and rework it. It was ultimately rejected, but that doesn’t diminish my desire to put it up here. Downloadable: Press Release (Police Departments). Month, date, year.

Mandy Brown Houk, author. In Defense of: Creepy Stories. I don't think of myself as a morbid person. I have certainly never been described that way by others. At least not to my face. Hmm. Been described as spunky, bubbly, hyper, talkative, silly, dorky, scattered, and sensitive (you may have surmised that not all of these descriptions were meant to be compliments). And I have recently expanded my appreciation for Shirley Jackson. We Have Always Lived in the Castle. On occasion, it occurs to me to worry ...

Musings of a night owl reference librarian . . . Recreational reading in college. Maybe I’ll find this all out the hard way, but I’m convinced that this isn’t exactly true. Maybe most students aren’t reading. I think so. I know several (and am married to one) people who read magazine and newspaper articles, essays and short stories more frequently than books. So then, aren’t blogs like other short form writing?
