Shooting Roots

Roots grow with plants - you can't always see them but they're underground, winding round other roots, forming networks, carving out channels in the soil. Wednesday, 30 December 2009. Flitters and flutters. and quite big kicks. Saturday, 19 December 2009. It's all about bubble baths. I can't get enough of them. It's getting ridiculous. My lovely husband comes home from work and knows where to find me without even shouting around the house. Thursday, 10 December 2009. Baby Belly - 13 weeks and 6 days.

Shooting Roots: January 2009

http://shootingroots.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Roots grow with plants - you can't always see them but they're underground, winding round other roots, forming networks, carving out channels in the soil. Monday, 5 January 2009. Reports from The Ground. As usual, even the headline frames this as regrettable but justifiable military action against terrorists. The report from this volunteer is tragic. What makes it worse is that she says that she has been contacted by the BBC for reports. what have they done with them? Jabalia 4 Jan 6pm - 5 Jan 5pm. 2pm: ...

Shooting Roots: May 2008

Roots grow with plants - you can't always see them but they're underground, winding round other roots, forming networks, carving out channels in the soil. Sunday, 18 May 2008. It's all change in our shopping habits since my post about supermarkets. I was so unconvinced by my own arguments, that I've pretty much stopped frequenting their hallowed aisles. Instead, I've been doing our fruit and veg shopping at Unicorn in Chorlton. And only buying local. So are we just eating vegetables? Pretty much. I'm...

Roots grow with plants - you can't always see them but they're underground, winding round other roots, forming networks, carving out channels in the soil. Monday, 24 August 2009. It isn't all about food. I do other things. Today I was sitting at my kitchen table, minding my own business. I was eating bran flakes (improved with flaked almonds and linseeds) and drinking a cup of herbal tea. I was perusing jobs in Scotland that I might like to apply for someday. They are told to go back to their home countr...

Roots grow with plants - you can't always see them but they're underground, winding round other roots, forming networks, carving out channels in the soil. Thursday, 10 December 2009. Baby Belly - 13 weeks and 6 days. Last week I accidentally caught a glimpse of myself side on in the mirror in a public bathroom. Wow. There was curvature. Interesting. Good work. Still really really fussy about my food and prefer things that have no flavour at all. Still getting very dizzy, especially first thing in...We fo...

Shooting Roots: Shooting Your Own Roots

http://shootingroots.blogspot.com/2009/12/shooting-your-own-roots.html

Roots grow with plants - you can't always see them but they're underground, winding round other roots, forming networks, carving out channels in the soil. Thursday, 3 December 2009. Shooting Your Own Roots. So Here's the wee roots of my own that I've been busy shooting over the past 13 weeks. But instead, they grow inside other people? What a magical way of creating new life. You couldn't think up this kind of fairy story if you tried. OH MY GOD congratulations! 3 December 2009 at 18:47. Mother, wife and...

Year in South Africa: January 2008

http://davebiles.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Year in South Africa. Tuesday, January 22, 2008. Christmas to start of a new year in Cape Town. Its been along time since I've posted on the blog. I'm going to go for the short and the long approach (as promoted by Eddie Armstrong, cheers Eddie! The Short: Back, legally, in Cape Town, after a people full Christmas, Birthdays and bureaucracy. Running a marathon in March. So I drove to Swaziland, where I waited and read my book for 2 days while the visa ran out and then came back into the country. Instead,...

Year in South Africa: June 2008

http://davebiles.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Year in South Africa. Monday, June 02, 2008. Xenophobia changes Cape Town. Finally, after much discussion, many boreded the trucks and at 4:00am. I got driven home by Hennie, a volanteer from another NGO, and crashed out. The photos above show the white board Firday night, the train station and an impromtu meeting on Sat (the office was busier than this most of the time). This is only the first two days, I am going to try and wrtie about the rest of the week since, tomorrow. Posted by Dave at 1:17 PM.

Year in South Africa: October 2007

http://davebiles.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Year in South Africa. Friday, October 26, 2007. Is it a rabbit? Apparently there is a rabbit in the moon here! We dashed up Lion's Head after medical school yesterday evening to have a look. Unfortunately it was too cloudy to see the full moon properly, but it was a great sunset. I will have to try again next full moon! Posted by Dave at 1:24 PM. Rugby world cup in South Africa. I spent part of the game chatting to one of the good looking (self proclaimed too) Norwegian students. Having never seen th...

Year in South Africa: August 2007

http://davebiles.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

Year in South Africa. Wednesday, August 29, 2007. I went to see the Lion King last night. It was fabulous. I feel, I just want to write a list of superlatives! Have you seen it? If not, you really should if you get the opportunity! I've been on Safari, but this had far more color, much more excitement, music, singing and dancing animals than I've ever seen from a top of a landrover. Posted by Dave at 2:02 PM. Sunday, August 26, 2007. Dad, where are we? Well, the middle of nowhere really.". They insisted ...

Year in South Africa. Sunday, April 27, 2008. A change of profession? I've been following the story. About the Chinese ship full of guns, bullets and rocket propelled grenades set for Zimbabwe with glee. The ship has failed to its make the delivary because South African dock workers refused to unload it. My anti-arms-trade-campaigning-medic-friends will enjoy today's spoof agony aunt in the South African Sunday Times. Dear Sis Beatrice,. Posted by Dave at 6:08 AM. Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Year in South Africa: May 2008

http://davebiles.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Year in South Africa. Tuesday, May 13, 2008. I just spent a totally surreal weekend in the Hex River Valley. I joined my housemates and the University of Cape Town mountain and ski club (apparently there is snow for skiing in SA if you try hard enough to find it) on their annual social. Suitably it takes place on top of a mountain! UCT hut with the a placard reading, "in memory of . who died here". It did nothing for my confidence. Posted by Dave at 1:47 AM. Friday, May 09, 2008. The cries went up! A com...

Year in South Africa: March 2008

http://davebiles.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Year in South Africa. Monday, March 31, 2008. It was ultra long and ultra exhilarating to finish! Last weekend was the two oceans ultra marathon. 7000 people started in Cape Town and headed straight to the coast were the route cuts across the peninsula to the other coast for a series of hills. First up Chapman’s peak, and then a steady climb out of Hout Bay before eventually finishing at University of Cape Town 56km later. Just before half way a fellow runner whipped up conversation! The third photo abov...

Year in South Africa: December 2007

http://davebiles.blogspot.com/2007_12_01_archive.html

Year in South Africa. Monday, December 24, 2007. Arriving in Namibia’s Etosha game park, after over hours of barren landscape, not many people (Namibia is the most scarcely populated country in the world) and certainly no animals and met with yet more dust, the chance of seeing any wildlife seemed dismal. We also met the Afrikaans version of crocodile dundee. Apparently he had caught a leopard once with his bare hands! From the heat of the desert we headed to the coast for a few days enjoying the cool (a...

Year in South Africa: November 2007

http://davebiles.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Year in South Africa. Tuesday, November 20, 2007. Winelands marathon: No wine but ended up legless. Last weekend I ran the Winelands marathon in Stellenbosch. It was my first ever marathon and what an experience! And we were off! The race weaved its way out of town and climbed a gentle hill through the vineyards. A gentle mist still lay between the vines as the dawn sun strained though the clouds above the mountain behind us. A beautiful start to the race. I was exhilarated when I realized I had finished...
