On the death of General James Tyrell in 1742 the estate was made over to a son of Augustus Schutz, the latter having accompanied William III when he came to England. His descendant Thomas Schutz died in 1839 leaving the estate to his cousin George Vandeput Drury. After Drury’s death a Mrs. Ann Earle occupied the house until the estate was purchased in 1871 by Col. James Miller. Computer, Network and Internet Services.

The name Shotover, like so many early names, is of obscure origin but is most likely to have come from the Old English ‘scoet ofer’ meaning ‘hill slope’ which, given the local topography, seems to be a reasonable explanation. In the Domesday Book the name is shown as ‘Scotorne.’ The suggestion in some books that it is a corruption of ‘chateau vert’ seems rather fanciful and is linguistically unlikely. The architect of the house is unknown but could possibly have been William Townesend who worked with Nicholas Hawksmoor at The Queen’s College in Oxford and may have designed some of the building there. Although nothing can definitely attributed to Townesend the elder Tyrrell was a member of Queen’s and it would have made sense for him to employ people from his old college. Shotover possesses the rare survival of a formal garden begun around 1718 and completed in the 1730s. A print of c.1750 shows the layout with long avenues and cross walks, many of which still remain. East of the house a series of fish ponds was converted to a single pond and a canal, with a large Gothick Temple closing the vista. Computer, Network and Internet Services.
