Switching from Git Submodules to CocoaPods
http://samvermette.com/318
MAR 15, 2013. Switching from Git Submodules to CocoaPods. I've been using CocoaPods. For the last month and so far it's really been a love/hate relationship (more on that later). Because it's still a young project, I wasn't able to find a good tutorial on how to make the switch, so hopefully this will be of help to some of you. Break free from submodules. From your project's root:. Remove references you have to your submodule files in Xcode or in the file system. Gem install cocoapods $ pod setup. CocoaP...

Pulling the Plug on Shows
http://samvermette.com/319
AUG 30, 2013. Pulling the Plug on Shows. The sad day has come that I officially resign from developing Shows. My music concert app. Shows was my first utility app that I pushed to the App Store almost 4 years ago. It has evolved from a very rough, default-UI-looking app into a fully custom design. That taught me countless things about design and programming. Two years ago, and it's now what gets me up in the morning (that's right, I said morning. But for all the reasons I previously mentioned, I don't se...

DEC 30, 2010. To never miss a gig. You definitely need to be notified of newly announced concerts. Shows 1.x had this, but it was flaky at best. And since I redesigned 2.0 from scratch, I took the opportunity to rewrite the whole APN server code as well. PHP classes like php-apns. And Ruby on Rails gems such as apn on rails. Just pointed out the APNS ror gem. Which is pretty much what I was looking for from the start. But hey, at least now you know how it works! PHP (for old time sake). Apple doesn’...

I've been writing code and designing mockups for longer than I can remember. I guess I've always been obsessed with how people interact with things. So I figured: what better way to scratch that itch than to create things myself? During the cold, boring classes of winter 2009, I started learning Objective-C and pushed my first apps to the App Store. Meanwhile, I continued developing for the web, collaborating with artists like Luc Courchesne. Often refered to as the " Facebook of stuff.

My Design Principles
http://samvermette.com/307
NOV 7, 2011. For the past year has been an exciting journey, and it definitely made me a better developer and designer. Throughout my way, a few key principles kept hitting me back, so much that they have become my personal ground rules when it comes to designing app UIs. Hopefully they can serve you as well. Don’t rush it. Not just good enough. Get feedback (and put your ego aside). Is this tap area too small? Keeping all these things in mind, it takes months. To come up with a good UI. You will des...
