Show Your Thinking

Saturday, August 15, 2015. It's almost time to go back to school. while my brain has been engaged with teaching professional development and participating in Twitter conversations with #MTBoS tweeps all summer, there is something special about the start of the school year. When it's time for back to school, teachers either feel dread or excitement, or sometimes a complicated combination of both! 1 I want to try vertical non-permanent surfaces. 3 I really want to try choral counting. I've been reading abo...

Show Your Thinking: Bullet Journal

http://www.showyourthinkingmath.blogspot.com/2015/08/bullet-journal.html

Saturday, August 8, 2015. I've been reading about a new (to me) idea for organizing calendars/to-do lists. It's called Bullet Journaling. I'm so excited to try it out and would love any tips or tricks from people that have tried it! Check out this video by the creator, Ryder Carroll, that explains the basics of Bullet Journals well:. I also found some helpful pictures and blog posts on Pinterest. Check them out here. I also have these Staedtler pens. Which I love as well. Or Midori Traveller Notebooks.

Show Your Thinking: The Nesting Stage of Summer

http://www.showyourthinkingmath.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-nesting-stage-of-summer.html

Sunday, August 2, 2015. The Nesting Stage of Summer. Now that it's officially August, I feel that it's really time to think about "Back to School." All summer I've been reading blogs and tweets and slightly thinking about how I want to set up my classroom. But, to be honest, I have been thinking more about my new role as a math coach. So, for some reason, this morning I had a moment of panic. Must Read. All. The. Blogs! Must Read. All. The. Tweets! Bought bins to keep interactive notebooks at the tables,...

Show Your Thinking: I love Pi

http://www.showyourthinkingmath.blogspot.com/p/i-love-pi.html

Pi Day is March 14th! A math holiday. yay! Years ago I started celebrating Pi Day in my classroom. Each year I've held a pi memorizing contest and tried to memorize a little myself. I'm up to 30 digits. :) I've worn pi shirts. Here are some resources and ideas to help you celebrate pi in your classroom! The classic lesson: measure diameter of circles and use string to measure circumference. Divide and discover that you get pi (or close) each time no matter how large or small the circle! Where Should Pi Go.

BigTime Literacy: October 2014

http://www.bigtimeliteracy.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Windy City Literacy Coach. Monday, October 27, 2014. I've been using Jan Richardson's The Next Steps in Guided Reading. This school year to make my guided reading lessons even better! It's been about 4 or 5 weeks that I've been teaching a group of second graders. Their Instructional Reading level is G-H, so we're using the Early Lesson Plan. The following is what is involved. First, students in the class I teach each have their own book bin, which includes their Reader's Notebook and the following:.

BigTime Literacy: March 2015

http://www.bigtimeliteracy.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Windy City Literacy Coach. Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Day 31: challenge accepted. GIVE some love via comments. Today I got to go plan with the third grade team. We were taking a third grade assessment again so we could create a rubric. I had said something like, "I love doing this! Fast forward a few minutes as I was composing an Instagram post, and I said, "I love emojis! I wish I could speak in all emojis! Sometime thereafter, Jennie said something along the lines of "Michelle loves everything.". Ummmmno...

BigTime Literacy: July 2015

http://www.bigtimeliteracy.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Windy City Literacy Coach. Friday, July 31, 2015. I had such a great July! This challenge, of course, was part of the reason why. What I love about blogging are the connections we can make with one another. It's so nice to have friends in the blogosphere and also when people I know in real life write, too! But then there were some great posts, too. I wrote poetry and liked how it turned out, and I'm most proud of my post There's No App for That. I learned lots, too! We were talking about how we would des...

BigTime Literacy: August 2015

Windy City Literacy Coach. Monday, August 31, 2015. Getting cozy with Calkins. Is anyone out there getting acquainted with the new Reading Units of Study from Lucy Calkins and her colleagues at The Teachers College? We are so lucky to use this curriculum in our school district, and so our teachers are beginning to orient themselves to the new units of study. In an effort to smooth things out, I've created a little cheat-cheat to figure it all out! First, let's start with the books. This book is really a ...

Windy City Literacy Coach. Wednesday, December 31, 2014. It's (almost) 2015 and a cold, cold last day of December here in Chi-Town! I am kinda missing the snow, but definitely not a fan of this cold weather we have going on! Anyways, excited for my 18th Currently with Farley. It's almost been two years doing this link-up with her and I LOVE it! Farley - you're awesome, thanks for getting us all together every month! If you're new to BigTime Literacy, I'd love to find some new bloggers to connect with!

BigTime Literacy: currently august

http://www.bigtimeliteracy.com/2015/08/currently-august.html

Windy City Literacy Coach. Sunday, August 2, 2015. I'm on vacation and was trying to unplug, but no such luck. I've been better though, just taking some morning time with my online world and then living in books and notebooks most of the rest of the day! So, without waiting anymore, let's get on with Currently. Listening to the waves. Thinking about Block Scheduling. I've been reading Atwell's third edition of In the Middle. Can't think of anything at the moment, and I'll take it! I know you're going to ...
